Liberty Ship Memorial South Portland Maine by Debra Martz The memorial is in Bug Light Park, a scenic point of land overlooking Portland Harbor which was once home to a sprawling World War II Shipyard that covered 140 acres of land, including over 60 buildings, and could build up to 13 ships at one time. From 1941 through 1945, the South Portland Shipyards built 266 cargo vessels, 236 of which were Liberty Ships, contributing immeasurably to the Allied victory in World War II. The sculpture accurately portrays the bow section of the Liberty Ship as she would have appeared under construction; measuring 35 feet tall and 65 feet long. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved 20231013-DSC_9892

Bug Lighthouse Portland Maine by Debra Martz It was a cloudy, windy, and rather cold day but that atmosphere added to the overall mood of this image of Bug Light aka South Portland Breakwater Light. The lighthouse was originally built in 1855, as a wooden structure, replaced with a classical iron structure in 1875. The light was fully restored in 1989 and was reactivated in 2002. It appears as a private aid to navigation in the US Coast Guard Light List as South Portland Breakwater Light. Construction of the fortress in the distance was started around 1858. By the time it was finished in 1864, the manner in which it was built was obsolete. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved
