Remembering Modell's Sporting Goods. Modell's Sporting Goods was an American sporting goods retailer with locations in the Northeastern United States. Modell's carried both sporting goods and related apparel. Modell's had more than 150 retail locations in ten states and the District of Columbia. Their flagship store was at 234 West 42nd Street near Times Square.

Founded by Herman Steinlauf in 1916 as a music store, Herman’s World of Sporting Goods was a large chain of sporting goods stores in the United States. At one time, there was a gentleman’s agreement with west coast competitor, Oshman’s Sporting Goods, that the Herman’s chain would stay east of the Mississippi, while Oshman’s would be dominant on the west coast. Later on, Herman’s did expand west with the acquisition of Salt Lake City-based Sunset Sports Centers, although this was short-lived. By 1992, Herman’s had 259 stores in 35 states, but the entered into bankruptcy in 1993, first closing stores in the New York metropolitan area, then the New York City stores.

The Crawfords Restaurant, Guns & Ammo sign on Main Street in Boonsboro, Maryland was one of the most photographed signs in town for over 40 years. I'm not sure if it was the unusual pairing of offerings, the grandmotherly figure secretly flipping off passersby, or the missing apostrophe in the name, but people loved that sign. Part restaurant and part sporting goods/general store, Crawfords was a true small town gem that served up lunch, breakfast, and dinner with a side of shotguns, jigsaw puzzles, and live bait to locals and tourists alike, all with a down home and rather eclectic vibe like no other.

Terni’s General Store was founded in 1919 by Italian immigrant, Leopoldo Terni, in the rural village of Millerton in Dutchess County, New York. The shop on the corner of Main Street quickly became a town gathering place where you could get the latest news, some penny candy, or just whittle away the day at the counter. During its 101-year run, Terni's was a multi-generational institution and a pillar of the community that won't be easily replaced.

Beginning with a single store at Century Plaza in Birmingham, Alabama in 1977, Just For Feet became one of the largest and fastest growing athletic chains in America. By 1999, Just For Feet had over 140 superstores in 25 states. Several features helped to distinguish Just for Feet stores from its competitors, including in-store basketball courts, walls of TVs airing sporting events, in-store appearances by professional athletes, loud rock and dance music setting the scene, and in-store snack bars. Despite things looking up for Just For Feet, a 1999 game day TV spot ended up being their undoing after the ad was decried as being racist. The sharp decline in sales helped to expose widespread accounting fraud, leading to Just For Feet's demise.
