The Gateshead Hoodies

Designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects and engineered by Gifford, the bridge takes its place at the end of a line of distinguished bridges across the River Tyne, including the Tyne Bridge and Robert Stephenson's High Level Bridge.

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge (sometimes known as the blinking eye bridge) spans the River Tyne between Gateshead Arts Quarter and the Newcastle Quayside. It is a pedestrian and cycle bridge first opened to the public in 2001 and was the first tilting bridge ever to be constructed.

Sitting on the banks of the River Tyne and looking like an alien object, The Sage Gateshead is instantly recognisable when visitors approach Newcastle upon Tyne over the Tyne Bridge. Made of curved glass and stainless steel, The Sage was opened at the end of 2004 and is now a major music venue, being home to the Royal Northern Symphonia as well as hosting a variety of concerts and music classes. The building was designed by Foster and Partners, who received a number of awards for the design.

Reflections on the Tyne river

This bridge across the River Tyne has become a landmark for the north-east of England and a catalyst for local regeneration. The bridge links Newcastle’s thriving north bank with the Gateshead Quays arts and cultural quarter. The bridge is essentially two graceful curves, one forming the deck and the other supporting it, spanning between two islands running parallel to the quaysides.

The Angel of the North is a contemporary sculpture, designed by Antony Gormley, located in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England. Completed in 1998, it is a steel sculpture of an angel, 20 metres (66 ft) tall, with wings measuring 54 metres (177 ft) across. The wings do not stand straight sideways, but are angled 3.5 degrees forward; Gormley did this to create "a sense of embrace". The angel like much of Gormley's other work is based on a cast of his body. It stands on the hill of Birtley, at Low Eighton in Lamesley, overlooking the A1 and A167 roads into Tyneside, and the East Coast Main Line rail route, south of the site of Team Colliery Camera: Canon EOS 5D

There are many well known bridges on the River Tyne around Newcastle upon Tyne. There are four of those bridges in this picture. The famous Tyne Bridge, beneath this, the High Level Bridge, then the blue Metro Bridge and finally the red Swing Bridge which was opened in 1876. The quayside in Newcastle upon Tyne provides visitors a pleasant walk alongside the river to view these bridges.

The Angel of the North is a contemporary sculpture designed by Antony Gormley, which is located in Gateshead, England. Work began on the project in 1994 and cost £1 million. It is a steel sculpture of an angel, standing 20 metres (66 ft) tall, with wings measuring 54 metres (177 ft) across. The wings themselves are not planar, but are angled 3.5º forward, which Gormley used to create "a sense of embrace". It stands on a hill on the southern edge of Low Fell, overlooking the A1 and A167 roads into Tyneside, and the East Coast Main Line rail route, south of the site of Team Colliery.
