Stax Records is an American record company, originally based in Memphis, Tennessee. Founded in 1957 as Satellite Records, the label changed its name to Stax Records in 1961. It also shared its operations with sister label Volt Records. Stax was influential in the creation of Southern soul and Memphis soul music. Stax also released gospel, funk, and blues recordings. Renowned for its output of blues music, the label was founded by two siblings and business partners, Jim Stewart and his sister Estelle Axton. It featured several popular ethnically integrated bands (including the label's house band, Booker T. & the M.G.'s) and a racially integrated team of staff and artists unprecedented in that time of racial strife.

Record and Tape Traders was founded in 1977, initially operating out of a house in Towson, Maryland, the store sold new and used music, and as the name alludes to, bought, sold, and traded music as well. The store eventually outgrew their residential digs, moving into their Towson retail location, and further expanding over the years to have eight other locations, including Charles Village, Frederick, Bel Air, Catonsville, Westminster, and Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Like all too many traditional record stores, internet sales and streaming services began taking their toll, and one by one the stores were closed or sold until one remained.

Specialty Records was an American record label founded in Los Angeles in 1945 by Art Rupe. It was known for rhythm and blues, gospel, and early rock and roll, and recorded artists such as Little Richard, Guitar Slim, Percy Mayfield, and Lloyd Price. Rupe established the company under the name Juke Box Records but changed it to Specialty in 1946 when he parted company with a couple of his original partners. Rupe's daughter, Beverly, restarted the label in the 1980s. The record label was sold to Fantasy Records in 1991 and is now part of the Concord Music Group. The music publishing unit was sold to Sony/ATV Music Publishing.

Leroy Hurte was a musician, recording engineer, musician, educator, and promoter of African-American culture. He learned the business of manufacturing records while working at Allied Record Manufacturing in Hollywood in the 1930s. In 1939, Hurte opened the Flash Record Store at 623 East Vernon Ave, where he established Bronze Records, one of the first independently owned record labels to record African-American artists. Hurte is credited with having the first self-contained R&B recording and 78 RPM record manufacturing facility inside his record store, and as a result of his tenacity, recorded many artists that otherwise may have never been heard, let alone pressed to vinyl. All told, Hurte recorded more than 100 78's by the '50s.
