The Manticore is a monster of Persian mythology. Similar to a sphinx it is a lion with a human head and a spiked tail. Some more modern depictions of this creature of legend also have wings.

When human beings are born, they crawl, then they stand up and walk on their two legs, and in old age they use a cane to get around. So during its lifetime it uses 4, 2 and finally 3 "legs".

I recreated a 9th century bc ivory carving. The original piece was retrieved by the Israeli police from a dealer selling looted archaeological artefacts.
