In 1990 the 1st BCT (including the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Battalions of the 327th) was deployed to Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Shield. The 1st BCT established defensive positions north of Tap Line Road approximately 60 miles (97 km) south of the Iraq border. The 75th Ranger Regiment, also known as Rangers, or within JSOC as Task Force Red, is a light infantry, special operations unit of the United States Army. Three 12th Infantry battalions deployed to South Vietnam with the 4th Division from August through October 1966. Corps normally command three divisions at full strength (other units such as artillery, corps-level engineers, and support units are attached as well). The 3rd Infantry Division (nicknamed The Rock of the Marne) is a combined arms division of the United States Army based at Fort Stewart, Georgia. It is a direct subordinate unit of the XVIII Airborne Corps and U.S. Army Forces Command.

In November 1990, following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, more than 6,000 3rd Infantry Division men and women deployed with the 1st Armored Division on Operation Desert Storm as part of the Allied Coalition. They participated in the Battle of Medina Ridge which was the second largest tank battle of the conflict.

The Iron Rakkasans moved back to Fort Campbell, Kentucky in February 1964, to serve as part of the 3rd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division. The 22nd Infantry was reactivated on 1 June 1940 at Fort McClellan, Alabama, before inactivating on 1 March 1946 at Camp Butner, North Carolina. It reactivated 15 July 1947 at Fort Ord, California. It reorganized and was redesignated on 1 April 1957 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battle Group, 22nd Infantry and remained assigned to the 4th Infantry Division (with its organic elements being concurrently constituted and activated). It was reorganized and redesignated on 1 October 1963 as the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry. It was deployed to Vietnam as part of the 2d Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division and conducted operations in the Central Highlands.

At the Chosin Reservoir area, A brutal 17-day battle in freezing weather soon followed from between 27 November and 13 December, 30,000 United Nations Command troops (later nicknamed "The Chosin Few") were encircled and attacked by about 120,000 Chinese troops who had been ordered to destroy the UN forces.
