I made this inspired by the movie Boyz in the Hood, and the discourse in it about what stores we have in the hood vs. suburbs and the liberation by owning our own goods, resources.

So I challenged myself to use images that I had leftover that I wouldn't usually use, and am quite pleased at how it turned out. Something about it feels very haute couture embroidery.

The mountains of the Transantarctic Range, Glaciers and spectacular pressure ridges in the sea ice at Cape Hallett, Ross Sea, Antarctica. The ice is turned blue by the angle of the sun reflecting off the compressed ice. This colouring occurred for just a short while. The effects of Global Warming are beginning to be felt in the Antarctic Peninsula, but not this far south yet. Canon EOS, zoom lens. (Featured in A Photographer's Craft & Other Groups.)

Expeditioners walking on the fast ice between the ramparts of the Drygalski Ice Tongue. The Drygalski Ice Tongue (an extension of the Davide Glacier) extends into the sea for about 80 kilometres. The Drygalski Ice Tongue forms the southern edge of Terra Nova Bay in the Ross Sea, Antarctica. Glaciers are formed when pieces of the ice tongue break off its far end due to sea and wind erosion. Much of the sea on the Northern side of the tongue is open in summer, rather than ice as the massive tongue, which rises to about 10 stories high above the water, offers a degree of protection from the worst of the weather. A second print inspired by the works of Jan van Huysum. Beginning in 2009, an extraordinary transformation was noticed in the Antarctic ecosystem. That season was followed by a brief cool before warmth returned in 2012. Since then year-over-year temperature increases have lead to flourishing native plants in the area. A huge tabular iceberg protrudes from the sea ice about the height of a 10 story building, Ross Sea, Antarctica. About 6 to 7 times more is below the ocean. Such tabular icebergs are new, that is less than 1 year old, having recently calved from the glaciers, or the ice tongues or the Ross Ice Shelf. Photographed in the late afternoon. The sea around the iceberg is just starting to freeze, so although the surface is flat the reflection is muted to the ice crystals. Canon EOS, zoom lens.

Glacial icebergs and mountains surround Cierva Cove on the Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica. The zodiac creates an interesting wash in the foreground. Light cloud moves in quickly. The map of the world was first created by Ptolemy 2,000 years ago. But this map is like no other one ever seen before. It is a double hemisphere, on a polar projection. I made this collage in tribute to the late Sinead O'Connor and what it feels like being a woman from girlhood on. It's a constant walking violence, constant being told to shut up, shrink, be small, don't protest, don't make noise, don't fight for your rights, don't question. A walking wound, being punished for any way in which you exist. But inside, there are wolves gnashing out, destroying the threads of patriarchy slowly but surely and paving the way with blood, like Sinead.
