Seen from the Thames path between Marlow and Henley-on-Thames, the church of All Saints in the riverside village of Bisham in Berkshire, just upstream of the National Sports Centre. The Grade 2 listed church dates from the 12th century, the oldest remaining part being the tower.

Approaching the bottom gate of Sulhamstead lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal in Berkshire, England. The lock was originally constructed between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of the engineer John Hore from Newbury. The lock has a rise and fall of 1.25 metres (4ft 1inch) The Kennet and Avon was designed to link the rivers Kennet in the east and Avon in the west so that goods could be transported from Bristol to London. It was completely renovated in the late 1900s.

A Bright Sunny Day In Windsor

Looking over the North Wessex (or Berkshire) Downs in mid-spring. The landscape here is now dominated by swathes of yellow as the oil seed rape is in full bloom. Here it is backed by an emerald green, tree-crested knoll. Not so good for those with hay fever - but it looks spectacular!

The scene looking upstream and under the ironwork of the toll bridge connecting Whitchurch-on-Thames in Oxfordshire with Pangbourne in West Berkshire. The present, very picturesque bridge is made of iron and was originally built in 1902. However, due to age and wear It was recently refurbished in 2013--14. It's one of only two toll bridges remaining over the Thames, the other being at Swinford near Witney, Oxfordshire Canon G12

The Windsor Town Bridge crossing the River Thames, linking Windsor and Eton in Berkshire, England. River transport was always important here particularly with the royal palace at Windsor. There has been a bridge on this site since at least the C12th when records show tolls of the equivalent of £4.33 being paid to a landowner, Osbert de Bray, for boats passing beneath the bridge. The present bridge with cast iron arches was opened in 1824. In 1970 it was made pedestrian only as it was now too weak for heavy traffic. Even pedesrian traffic took its toll on the structure so it was refurbished and reopened by the Queen in June 2002. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

Two narrowboats on the Kennet and Avon in the winter sunshine just downstream from the swing bridge at Woolhampton in Berkshire. This section of the waterway is the Kennet Navigation as it is partly river which has been made navigable. The Kennet and Avon Canal, 87 miles long, was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link the Thames and Avon rivers, providing a smooth transport link between Bristol and London via Reading. The opening of Brunel's Great Western Railway - which runs next to the waterway - started its steady decline and by the mid-1900s it was in a sorry state! Following restoration from the 1950s onwards it was fully reopened to traffic in 1990 and is now busy with leisure craft as well as those who live on the canal. ...

The weir on the River Thames at Reading, Berkshire. There has been a weir here for many hundreds of years. The Thames was originally dammed to provide water for the local mills - one being recorded here in the Domesday Book (1086). A weir, mill and flash lock (removable paddles) were referred to in 1493 when they were granted to Notley Abbey. Now the weir provides control over the river's flow - so necessary during times of flood.

Just upstream from Caversham Bridge, swans regularly gather in the hope of food - which is always forthcoming! The bridge spans the River Thames linking Reading and Caversham. The first bridge here was built c1163. During the Civil War a skirmish on the bridge resulted in the Reading side being rebuilt with a wooden drawbridge. This was later painted on canvas by JMW Turner. The present bridge dates from 1926. Swans and geese are a feature here as they gather by the Reading Rowing Club boathouse

A pleasure boat taking sightseers on a trip along the River Thames. Here it's passing the boathouses on the Caversham riverbank at Reading, Berkshire. This is a busy stretch of the Thames with boats such as this often negotiating their way through racing crews in training, private launches, canoeists and the ever-present flocks of swans and geese! At the end of the day the last rays of sun lighting the boathouses belonging to sports clubs based on the Thames at Caversham, Reading. This stretch of river is often busy with rowing crews, kayakers and canoeists training, but now all is quiet and the boats are stored.

Approaching the Town Lock in the centre of Newbury, England on the Kennet and Avon Canal. From here the canal flows under the Town Bridge eastwards towards Reading. The K&A as it is known stretches for 87 miles between Reading and Bristol and has 105 locks. The canal was built between 1794 and 1810 to link the rivers Kennet and Avon, enabling goods to travel between Bristol and London. It fell into disuse with the coming of the railways but was restored in the late 1900s .

A digital sketch of the river at Whitchurch-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. in early autumn. This is the scene form the toll bridge wich links the villages of Whitchurch and Pangbourne (Berkshire). The church of St Mary stands above the cottages which surround the old mill - no longer working but converted into flats. The church, originally built in Norman times underwent an extensive rebuilding programme during the Victorian period.

Boats moored on the Thames riverside just above the old mill at Goring-on-Thames. Just above here the river divides with the navigation channel passing through the lock next to Goring and Streatley weir. Here though it passes under the road bridge before rushing through the sluices and through Goring Mill. But here all is calm, the moorings fronting old half timbered buildings which house amoung other things a dental surgery. It's been a hot summer resulting in a build-up of green weed.

It's early in December after a hard overnight frost. The footpath between Tidmarsh and Sulham in West Berkshire is bathed in late morning sunlight. The track here crosses the small brook which lies halfway between the two villages by means of a wooden bridge. Both villages lie near Pangbourne which contains all the facilities such as shops, library, hostelries and restaurants.

Sulham, seen in the distance below the trees of Sulham Hill, is a small village lying by the Sul Brook which makes its way to the Thames just downstream from Pangbourne.

The toll bridge over the River Thames linking the villages of Pangbourne and Whitchurch on Thames. This view is from Pangbourne Meadows on the south bank looking north to Whitchurch.. The first bridge here was wooden and was constructed in 1792 followed by a further one in 1852. The present bridge is iron and was originally built in 1902. It was recently refurbished in 2013--14. It is one of only two toll bridges remaining over the Thames, the other being at Swinford. Canon Powershot G12

The toll bridge at Whitchurch on Thames, spanning the river between Pangbourne in Berkshire and Whitchurch in Oxfordshire, England. There has been a bridge here since 1792, the present iron one, constructed in 1902 being the third. It is one of the few remaining toll bridges on the River Thames. From October 2013 until September 2014 the bridge was closed to traffic in order that it could be completely dismantled and refurbished. Nikon D7000

A footbridge over the River Pang in the watermeadows adjacent to the village of Pangbourne in Berkshire. The footpath leads from Pangbourne and follws the river, crossing here, to emerge at Tidmarsh a mile or so away. The Pang is a chalk stream which rises in Compton on the Berkshire Downs (although this is dependant on rainfall) and flows through West Berkshire to join the Thames at Pangbourne. It has a wide variety of wildlife, supported by a large nature reserve at Tidmarsh.

The sun sets over Black Swan Lake at Dinton Pastures Country Park near Hurst, Berkshire. The Park is on the site of former gravel extraction workings and was opened to the public in 1979. It is now a centre for watersports, wildlife conservation, angling, walking and cycling.

A narrowboat moored next to a restaurant, once a watermill, on the banks of the Thames at Maidenhead in Berkshire. Just behind us the river passes through Boulters Lock, the subject of paintings especially in Victorian and Edwardian times. This is Ray Mill Island and in the background a new footbridge leads over the river to Taplow. A lovely place to stop for refreshment on your journey along this beautiful river.
