Originally known as Family Video Movie Club, Family Video was a family-owned video rental chain based in Glenview, Illinois that served the United States and Canada through more than 750 retail stores. While competitor's focused on saturating larger cities, Family Video locations were primarily established in rural areas, suburbs, and small-to-midsize cities. After the demise of America's two much larger video rental players, Family Video was the last rental chain in operation. Rather than depending on the revenue-sharing model used by others, the chain bought and owned its movies to keep all the rental profit, and also owned all of their stores, avoiding leasing issues that were largely responsible for taking other chains down.

Films distributed by notorious home video label Go Video could be found behind the counter of every video store in the UK - they were responsible for bringing video nasties such as Cannibal Holocaust and SS Experiment Camp into the home (and the grapevine of every schoolyard) in the late 70s and early 80s.

There are entire generations out there who have no idea that there used to be dedicated TV stores that literally sold nothing but televisions and television accessories. From furniture like cabinet based models to and early big screen projection sets to compact counter top sets and early portable models, these local stores were the place to go if you needed a new TV, one of those fancy new video cassette recorders, or a satellite dish bigger than your car. Located in Downtown Jacksonville, Florida, Television City of was one of these stores, and if you listened to their TV and radio spots, they were THE place to go for a new set.

Remembering the days of the independent video store!

In December 1977, George Atkinson spent approximately $3,000 to buy one Betamax and one VHS copy of each of the 50 available movie titles from Magnetic Video, which were then being sold to the public by direct mail. He announced the availability of the videos for rent in the local newspaper under the business name 'Video for Rent' along with a coupon for readers to fill out and mail in. Atkinson renamed his operation 'The Video Station' and opened what would be the first professionally managed video rental store in a 600 square foot storefront on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. In order to raise capital, Atkinson charged $50 for an annual membership and $100 for a lifetime, which provided the opportunity to rent the videos at a discount.
