The James Gang is an American rock band formed in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1966. The band underwent various lineup changes until they recorded their first album as a power trio consisting of Joe Walsh, Tom Kriss, and Jim Fox.

Morgan Hiller (Spader) is an intelligent but bullied teenager from Connecticut who relocates to Los Angeles with his strict mother and his father after his father's business goes under. Morgan befriends Jimmy Parker (Downey) but struggles to make other friends.
