Begun in 1980, Tourist Island was an amusement park for Iraqis on the Tigris River north of Baghdad. Once the home of restaurants, a marina, an outdoor theater and an amphitheater, it was occupied by the Iraqi Army prior to the beginning of the Iraq War... which resulted in an ex-amusement park following the fighting.

It served in combat during the Indian Wars in the western United States, the Spanish–American War in Cuba and in the Philippine–American War. The regiment was trained as a combat unit but later relegated to non-combat duty and served in that capacity in World War II until its deactivation in 1944. The regiment have served in conflicts ranging from the Vietnam War to Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In December 2006, 2nd BCT deployed once again to Iraq in support of OIF. On 4 January 2007, 2nd Brigade deployed to northern Bagdad in the Sumer and Talbiyah district, returning 8 March 2008. On 4 June 2007, 1st Brigade deployed to Southern Iraq, returning 15 July 2008. Since the deployment began, the division has lost 37 paratroopers. Since 11 September 2001, the division has lost 20 paratroopers in Afghanistan and 101 paratroopers in Iraq

I have no idea what this one is. From the printed design I would say I picked this up from a vendor who occasionally was at Camp Victory. It could have been some special commando unit for all I know.

Dhi Qar is a governate. The city being referred to might be Nasiriyah, the principal city of the governate. If so, this was the site of the Coalition's farthest advance in Desert Storm and of the ambush during OIF which saw several soldiers from the 11th ADA Brigade captured.

In March 2003, the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, deployed to Iraq with the 4th Infantry Division as a part of the 1st Brigade, 4ID. The Battalion was instrumental in the hunt and eventual capture of Saddam Hussein during Operation Red Dawn, on 13 December 2003. It was decorated with a Valorous Unit Award for its service during this period.

Although one of the smaller contingents which participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom the Estonians were responsible for some of the rougher neighborhoods in Baghdad while I was there and provided staff officers at MNCI as well. I got this patch at the local souk... must have been enough being bought to make it worth their while.

Turkey finally allowed American overflights on 23 March. This allowed Task Force Viking to expand to 50 individual Special Forces Operational Detachments-Alpha (ODAs) (formerly known as A-Teams.) Reinforcing the ODAs on 26 March, the 173rd made a combat jump onto Bashur airfield 40 miles (64 km) north of the "Green Line". This was the largest airborne assault since World War II. The 173d assumed the security mission of Bashur from 10th Group ODA's and Peshmerga, receiving the airborne insertion of 1st Infantry Division armor on 7 April, followed by the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

n May 2003, the Spartans deployed to central Baghdad, Iraq, for a fifteen-month mission in support of the Iraq War's Operation Iraqi Freedom. The battalion deployed to Iraq for a second time in 2006, where it provided security and stability to the city of Hit. The unit redeployed to Germany in February 2007.

The 36th Armored Infantry was formed on 1 July 1916 at Brownsville, Texas from elements of the 4th Infantry, 26th Infantry and 28th Infantry.[1] It was assigned to the 12th Division on 5 July 1918, relieved from the 12th Division 31 January 1919, and inactivated at Fort Jay New York on 13 October 1921.

In October 2004, the 48th Infantry Brigade was notified that it would be mobilized into federal service in support of the Global War on Terrorism. This one is just what it says it is: the 302nd Bn of the 40th Bde of the Iraqi Defense Forces. I don't recall if this is a particularly unimaginative unit patch or if this was supposed to be a standardized design for all units.

A unit of the Iraqi Defense Forces, I have no idea what this unit's true designation is but obviously it is copying U.S. Army convention with its triangle-and-title design and unit number at the peak. Picked this one up because I liked it.

MND-SE was the area of Iraq centered around Basrah and led by the UK contingent. I picked this patch up while I was at Camp Victory.

I honestly don't know what unit this is... Heck, it might just be meant as a souvenir of Iraq's national soccer team!

During the 2003 invasion of Iraq, all three Ranger Battalions were assigned to a new Task Force. It was based on the concept of a prior successful Task Force, and its task was to seize key locations, long distance Special Reconnaissance and capturing HVTs. On 24 March 2003, 3rd Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment conducted a combat drop onto H-1 Air Base, securing the site as a staging area for operations in western Iraq. On 1 April 2003, 290 Rangers from 1/75th and 2/75th took part in the rescue of PFC Jessica Lynch; also that day Delta Force and 3/75th captured the Haditha Dam and held it for a further 5 days.

Once serious attacks became uncommon inside the wire, the U.S. Army soldier would get he comforts of home: fast-food, convenience shopping and 24-hour banking.

Shorja Market was once the Jewish Quarter of Baghdad, before pogroms in 1950 and 1968 saw their eviction from the city and Iraq. During OIF several attacks against this "soft" target by insurgents killed dozens of innocent people.

It was always a mystery to me how Stars And Stripes, the newspaper of the overseas soldier, could run Doonesbury. It always struck me as the same of running the "Best of Krokadil" during the Vietnam War.
