Heron With Another Stick @Debra Martz In Rockport, Texas there is a large stand of Live Oak trees that serves as a rookery each year during the breeding season. It is across the street from the bay which is a source of food for the Herons making this an attractive place to nest. I saw my very first Red-headed Woodpecker after moving to northern Oklahoma in late 2019. Since then, it has been my dream to capture an image of one. That dream happened in just a split second when this one landed along the Eagle Roost trail and just as quickly disappeared deep into the trees. I slowly made my way closer to where it landed in hopes it might return but after some time of waiting, I continued on my hike. Someday I will get that close-up shot of my dreams. But this image shows just how striking this woodpecker is. "The Red-headed Woodpecker has many nicknames, including half-a-shirt, shirt-tail bird, jellycoat, flag bird, and the flying checker-board." Green Jay Out On A Limb ©Debra Martz Green Jays are fairly skittish, coming out into the open and quickly flying back into the safety of the thick trees. like those in the background. It's a common tropical bird primarily in Mexico, Central America, and South America, but the Green Jay just makes its way into the United States in southern Texas. Scissor-tailed FlycatchJust as I turned off Oklahoma hwy 38 onto the gravel road that leads to the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge, I had the treat of Scissortails on both side of the road. I preferred this side with the golden fall grasses as a backdrop as the other side they were on power lines. They are the Oklahoma State Bird yet they are also a migratory bird and will be heading south soon. This litle Carolina Chickadee was singing beautifully deep in the trees. I followed its sounds until it appeared to be closer. At first I didn't see it until I looked straight up high in the treetop. Pelican Takeoff Kicking Up Mud by Debra Martz Due to an ongoing drought the lake was getting lower all the time. Places closer to the shore were becoming way to shallow for the large birds to successfully fish. So shallow that this one kicked up mud instead of the usual splash of water they make at takeoff. Northern Flicker Cross ©Debra Martz When I first saw this Northern Flicker I thought immediately that it was the Red-shafted male due to the red mustache. But, then looking at it on my computer I noticed a red patch on its nape which is something the Yellow-shafted variety has. So I've concluded that this is a cross of the two subspecies (Red-shafted x Yellow-shafted Intergrade). The two Northern Flicker subspecies are the red-shafted and the yellow-shafted of which both can be found in Oklahoma. The male red-shafted has a red mustache while the male yellow-shafted has a black mustache and a red patch on the nape. Seeing the smallest woodpecker in North America (usually the female) on the backyard suet feeder isn't unusual. Seeing this male (busy whittling wood here) and his female (unseen, but preening herself nearby) on the pear tree just when we got a spot of sunshine over the Great Backyard Bird Count 2017 (Feb 17-20) weekend, was!

Though they have a legendary reputation for being extremely feisty, the Rufous hummingbirds seem to be subdued this year, stealthily sneaking in visits to the flowers before suffering the wrath of the resident Anna's hummingbirds. This beautiful little stranger was camping out in the California Lilac, and guarding her precious stash of nectar from within this large cage-like shrub.
