Lens cells lack a nuclei, and the main constituent of the cells is the protein crystallin. Tightly packed layers of lens fibres (as seen here) are referred to as laminae. The lens fibres are linked together via gap junctions (one seen here) and interdigitations of the cells. The transparency of the lens is thought to arise from the regular arrangement of these cells. Organ of Corti. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the organ of Corti from the cochlea of the inner ear. The bony capsule that encloses the organ has been removed to reveal the organ's spiral structure. Rows of sensory hairs within the organ of Corti convert sound vibrations into nerve impulses that are sent along the auditory nerve to the brain. Different sound frequencies stimulate hairs in different positions along the spiral. Low frequencies stimulate those near the top of the spiral and high frequencies stimulate those near the bottom.

False-colour scanning tunnelling micrograph (STM) of DNA. A sample of uncoated, double-stranded DNA was dissolved in a salt solution & deposited on graphite prior to being imaged in air by the STM. An STM image is formed by scanning a fine point just above the specimen surface & electronically recording the height of the point as it moves. This image is dominated by the range of yellow "peaks" running down the left side, which represents the ridges of the helices in a right- handed, double-stranded DNA molecule (a so- called DNA duplex). Kidney stone. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of a kidney stone. Kidney stones are usually formed by the precipitation of the mineral salt calcium oxalate from the urine. The resulting hard, round stones (calculi) may cause severe pain, especially as they pass down the urinary tract. Large stones may need to be surgically removed or broken down using ultrasound therapy.

Diatoms. Coloured scanning electron micrographs (SEMs) of a circular arrangement of various diatoms. Diatoms are planktonic unicellular algae. They have a mineralised cell wall (frustule) divided into two halves. The frustule contains silica and provides protection and support. Magnification unknown.

Caffeine crystals. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of anhydrous caffeine crystals (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine). They were produced by a process called sublimation. A liquid containing caffine, such as coffee, is frozen and heated to 238 degrees Celsius, causing the frozen liquid to vaporise without going through the liquid phase. The vapour is then condensed, which drives the water out and results in anhydrous crystals. Some of the crystals have symmetrically intergrown (upper centre, red and yellow). Caffine stimulates the central nervous system (CNS), increasing alertness and deferring fatigue. It occurs in coffee beans and tea leaves. Magnification: x400 at 10 centimetres high.

Drawn in 2b pencil at Napier University in 2008 in a building that no longer exists. A former Library at the old campus building in Sighthill Edinburgh was used as the Art studio. Open roof windows meant the great space had plenty of natural light and I undertook this drawing in two afternoons of a Rubber plant partly starved of water! I have added digital colour to the pencil and as the original is A2 in size I scanned in sections resulting in a fair bit of banding! I've left the banding in because I didn't want to alter the pencil shading. The result is a rough approximation of the original, hope you like!!
