Baba Yaga, or Baba Roga, even Ježibaba in some Slavic countries, was an evil witch that looked like an ugly and frail old woman who lived in a forest cottage that stands on chicken feet. She is wicked and vicious and preys on ones who get lost in the woods. Serving a similar purpose like the boogeyman, Slavic parents have freaked out their children for generations: "If you misbehave, Babaroga will kill and eat you at night"... or something like that. She was a true nightmare fuel! I really enjoyed designing her evil-looking chicken feet cottage, because she was a big part of my own childood growing up.

This wiccan design features our favorite Slavic witch and her chicken legged hut. She dwells deep in the forest, holding up her lantern to light her path. She uses her broom to stabilize herself as she moves further on the path of enlightenment and wisdom.

From my Dark Mythos: Creatures of World Mythology art book (at charamath.com), comes Chernobog. This ancient Slavic god is actually the root of much debate, but in general he's the god of Darkness and his opposite was thought to be Belobog, the god of Light, but now both are thought to be simply two sides of the same god of the sun.

Povitruli are mystical creatures connected to the wind element. They're light and float in the air without ever touching the ground. Often portrayed as beautiful beings, they can change from a young to an old appearance and back again. Povitruli enjoy assisting lovers in their romantic endeavors. Originating from the Carpathian region in Ukraine, folklore suggests that if someone dreams of their beloved for nine consecutive nights, on the tenth night, a Povitrulya will descend from the sky in the image of their loved one. Shepherds, known for never refusing anything to their airborne mistresses, are said to keep their sheep safe with Povitruli's help.
