The Thames Kids Hoodies

I've always loved this image, well since 1982. It was originally captured on film when I was wandering around London during the winter, shortly before moving to Canada. In the foreground is a lamp standard, which is one of hundreds of similar ones that line the south bank of the Thames as it flows through central London. It's obviously is a reminder to me of my home town, but it does make a cool image.

The water mill at Hambleden on the River Thames between Henley and Marlow in Buckinghamshire. This picturesque, Grade 2 listed old mill has a long history, having been mentioned in the Domesday Book when the the rental value was £1 per year! Its location is the appropriately named Mill End, where the fast flowing Hambleden Bourne discharges into the Thames. Immediately below it is the weir, one of the longest on the Thames. From here the Chiltern Hills gradually rise to the north.

A bench by the side of the River Thames near Cookham, Berkshire. A lovely place to sit, rest and watch the river traffic go by! This is the stretch of the river which inspired paintings by the artist Stanley Spencer whose home was in the village. Nearby is a gallery dedicated to his work.

Standing on the banks of the River Thames at Eton and looking across to the town of Windsor with its historic royal castle dominating the skyline. There has been a castle here since the time of William I and it started its life as a royal residence in the early 1100s uder Henry 1. The river has always played an important part in Windsor's life, having been the main route to London until roads eventually improved. Turn left at the bridge to follow the Thames Path to Pangbourne. The mill features in a painting by JMW Turner. The Thames here passes through the Goring Gap between the Chiltern Hills and the North Wessex Downs.

The parish church of St Mary in the Thames-side village of Streatley in Berkshire, England. It lies very near the river and is almost next to the bridge linking Streatley with Goring. The church dates from the 13th century but was largely rebuilt in the mid 1800s as it was becoming rather dilapidated. However, many of the original building materials were used such as stone and the flint used for facing. At this time the nave roof was heightened and the clerestory windows added to give more light. A digital painting from my original photograph of the scene just upstream of the lock and weir at Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire in early autumn. This part of the river is known as The Goring Gap as it cuts through between the North Wessex (Berkshire) Downs and the Chiltern Hills. This is a designated Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Here we see the lock keeper's cottage on an island by the lock.

This area is a favourite of artists with canvas and/or camera - including the great JMW Turner. The Thames Path - a long distance National Trail - stretches from Cricklade in the Cotswolds to the Thames Barrier in London.

Looking upstream from the road bridge to Goring over the River Thames at Streatley. On the left are the newly refurbished buildings of the Swan Hotel. Its origins date from the C17th when it was apparently opened by the first owner, Francis Swan. In 1970 it was famously bought by Danny La Rue. The present owners have recently extensively refurbished it. The Thames path skirts the hotel before continuing along the river bank to Cleeve Lock and on to Wallingford.

Marlow, on the north bank of the River Thames in Buckinghamshire, captured from just above the lock and weir late one afternoon in Autumn. The river leads the eye towards All Saints church, the spire being a distinctive landmark in the area. Also in the background is the suspension bridge constructed in 1832. Designed by William Tierney Clark, it was the prototype for the Szechenyi Chain Bridge crossing the Danube in Budapest. Nikon D7100

A view of the River Thames as we cross over the weir at Benson in Oxfordshire, This is part of the Thames Path National Trail. Behind us the river flows on to Wallingford where this walk started - and ahead is the town of Abingdon and the city of Oxford. However, immediately ahead on this walk is a riverside bistro - a lovely place to sit and relax with a coffee and pastry before retracing our steps.

A digital painting from my original photograph of the lock at Benson in Oxfordshire. This can be reached via the Thames Path from Wallingford and, after crossing the adjacent weir, the walk can be continued to a very welcome riverside cafe and restaurant. The lock as we see it dates from 1870 but the first one was built in 1788 by the Thames Navigation Commission. Here a boat is passing through on its way upstream to Shillingford and then on to Abingdon and Oxford.

Seen from the Thames path between Marlow and Henley-on-Thames, the church of All Saints in the riverside village of Bisham in Berkshire, just upstream of the National Sports Centre. The Grade 2 listed church dates from the 12th century, the oldest remaining part being the tower. A digital drawing from my original photograph.

Here the artist Sir Stanley Spencer lived and painted, many of his works of art being set in the environs of this village. He is buried in the churchyard here.

The church of St Nicholas at Remenham in Berkshire. This picturesque church and the suirrounding houses of the village sit close to the banks of the River Thames.The Thames Path (a long distamce trail) passes close by. Remenham is also close to the start of the Henley Royal Regatta course at Temple Island. The church is Norman in origin and records exist of the first rector in 1076. It also received a mention in the Domesday Book (1086). However, the building as we see it dates from 1870.

A large vintage boat moored on the bank of the River Thames at Henley in Oxfordshire. This lovely old boat is almost a floating garden with containers of plants on the deck! The image was captured on a walk along the Thames Path at Henley going upstream towards Marsh Lock and weir. Across the river is the Berkshire bank of the river with the road from Henley to Wargrave-on-Thames. This is a digital coloured pencil drawing developed from my original photograph.

Design inspired by the classic West Ham United 1997 home jersey

The Thames Barrier is a retractable barrier system that is designed to prevent the floodplain of most of Greater London from being flooded by exceptionally high tides and storm surges moving up from the North Sea. It has been operational since 1982.

There are benches besides for the people to sit and enjoy the river. This bench is on the Barry Avenue next to off street car park.

As a musician I have a love of music and art and have combined these two passions into musically themed images.

A digital art view of a riverside scene at Cookham in Berkshire. The late winter sunshine warms up the scene with a family feeding swans under the gold of a willow tree. Cookham, a Thames beauty spot was also home to the artist Sir Stanley Spencer who could be seen wheeling a pram laden with his paining materials round the village and riverside - the inspiration for much of his work. He is buried in the local churchyard.

Thames, a Boat Gate near the Tower of London. Great Britain 2009

An impressionist's view of a launch travelling up the River Thames passing the parish church at Bisham in Berkshire. The 12th century parish church of All Saints stands on the banks of the Thames and is next door to Bisham Abbey, the National Sports Centre. Unsurprisingly, racing boat crews can often be seen training on the Thames here. This launch might well have come from the nearby Buckinghamshire town of Marlow-on-Thames - just downstream.

The road bridge over the River Thames at Abingdon in Oxfordshire. Abingdon is situated between Oxford and Didcot and was an important centre in medieval times, particularly because of the abbey of which a few buildings remain. The bridge in the image carries the road from the town centre to Dorchester-on-Thames. This image captured in late September with the first signs of autumn (or fall).

Caversham Bridge which spans the River Thames joining Reading town and Caversham. The first bridge here was built c1163. During the Civil War a skirmish on the bridge resulted in the Reading side being rebuilt with a wooden drawbridge added. This was later painted on canvas by JMW Turner. The present stone and concrete bridge dates from 1926. To create this image my original photograph has been given an oil pastel finish.

The River Thames as it flows past the market town of Wallingford in Oxfordshire, England. This view is from the old bridge that links the town with the village of Crowmarsh Gifford. Wallingford is almost exactly half way between Reading and Oxford and the river here would once have been busy with commercial traffic travelling to and from from London to the east and, after 1789, from the north of England via the newly completed Oxford canal. The river is still busy but now with pleasure craft.
