592d Signal Company, The Berlin Brigade of the United States Army was a separate brigade based in Berlin; its shoulder sleeve insignia was the U.S. Army Europe patch with Berlin tab. On 7 October 1965, the 281st Assault Helicopter Company, Airmobile Light was activated at Fort Benning. By 9 June the following year, the newly formed company set up its headquarters inside the 5th SFG compound at Nha Trang Bay, Republic of Vietnam. The unit's mission was to provide air movement of troops, supplies and equipment under the direct supervision of the commanding officer, 5th SFG. The 281st became the first organized special operations helicopter unit in the U.S. Army. Army historians consider the 281st to be the legacy unit for today's 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), abbreviated as 160th SOAR(A). The unit earned decorations for Valor and Meritorious Service.

Together with the 272nd MP Company, the 287th assumes the law enforcement mission in occupied Berlin. On Mar. 31, 1958, the Horse Platoon, previously assigned to the 287th MP Co., is deactivated in Berlin. On Jun. 1, 1958, the 272nd MP Co. is deactivated leaving the 287th as the sole American Military Police unit in Berlin. Concurrently, the 287th MP Co is designated a "separate unit." In Aug/Sept 1961, a small detachment of the 287th MP Co. is set up in Steinstuecken, a political enclave associated with West Berlin In Oct. 1961, is attached to the 287th for duty at Checkpoint Charlie.

The unit was the first Aeromedical Evacuation unit deployed to the Republic of Vietnam, arriving in country on 26 April 1962 and remaining until it was inactivated at Tan Son Nhut Air Base on 14 March 1973. During the 57th Medical Detachment's service in Vietnam, the unit's dedicated unhesitating service to the fighting forces, combined with an excellent medical support system, contributed to the lowest mortality rate for the United States Armed Forces of any conflict in military history.

United States Army Special Forces, Thailand, was originally organized as The Reactivated Company D (Augmented), 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), in 1966. In October of that year, after intensive pre-mission training, the unit deployed to Thailand. An SFOB was initially established at Camp Pawai, Lopburi, Thailand. At this time, major training camps were established at Nam Pung Dam, Nong Takoo and Ban Kachong. On 15th April 1967, the unit was redesigned 46th Special Forces Company (Airborne), 1st Special Forces. The organization no longer possessed the lineage of its previous designation but shares the lineage and honors of the parent regiment, The 1st Special Forces. In December 1967, the headquarters moved from Camp Pawai.

The 240th were located at Bearcat, Binh Hoa Province, Vietnam. Bearcat was located near Saigon on Highway One. Known as the “Greyhounds, Mad Dogs, and Kennel Keepers,” the 240th operated UH1C gunships, armed with mini-guns and rockets in the gun platoon, call sign “Mad Dog” and a transport or slick platoon flying UH1H slicks, call sign “Greyhound.” The maintenance platoon was known as the “Kennel Keepers.”
