His right hand is held in the teaching gesture and he holds a bound palm-leaf manuscript in his left.

Early February in the churchyard of St Laurence Church in the village of Tidmarsh, West Berkshire. A carpet of snowdrops is starting to flower next to the pathway leading to the south porch. This lovely old C12th church has a superbly decorated Norman doorway within the porch; a Norman font, C13th lancet windows - two with the remains of medieval wall paintings and some rare floor tiles. The image has a pencil art finish.

The Norman church of St Nicholas at Ibstone, Buckinghamshire, England. This old church sits surrounded by trees on the edge of the village of Ibstone in Buckinghamshire. Ibstone itself, which is a mere six miles from High Wycombe, is reached through narrow country roads and lies on the top of a hillside in the Chilterns overlooking wooded valleys. This Grade II listed church has a nave which dates from the 12thC, as do the chancel arch and font. The 15thC pulpit is thought to be one of the first in the country (priests stood on the chancel steps before that). The wooden bell cote is supported inside by sturdy oak beams intricately carved - apparently by the wife of a vicar in the C19th. A path by the church leads to the River Pang flowing to join the Thames at Pangbourne.

This is an image of the Cathedral Church of Saint Andrew the Apostle in the city of Wells, Somerset, England. There are many cathedrals in England dating back to medieval times, but this is described as being the first that was built in a purely gothic style. Apparently, construction stated in 1175 and continued into the 1400s. It's strange to think that there were people who toiled for years to build this remarkable edifice but in their lifetimes they were not able to see it completed. Even so, it remains as a symbol of faith to all who worked in its construction, they were truly craftsmen.

I didn't have a lot of time, but while visiting Wells, the smallest city in England, I did have a quick look around the wonderful Cathedral Church of St Andrew the Apostle. Once inside I was taken by the the remarkable Saint Andrew's Cross that sits within the criss-cross of an arch that separates the nave from the choir. I did read that the arch was an afterthought as during construction it was realised that there was some instability in the walls. As afterthoughts go, this provided a most graceful solution to the problem. As I read further, it seems that construction of the cathedral started in 1175 and continued into the 1400s, which makes me think that most of the people who toiled here to build this place never saw it complete.

This image was captured within the ruins of the Banteay Kdei Temple, in the Angkor Archaeological Park, near Siem Reap, Cambodia. The tower is one of several at the site. Looking at the way the walls and towers were constructed, it would appear that the sandstone blocks were mounted in place and then carved as needed.
