After Jackie's first attempt to break into the US film market, 1980's light weight The Big Brawl, failed to make much impact on audiences, a second production was greenlit, where Jackie played a tougher, modern "hero" roll, more in line with Clint Eastwood's "Dirty Harry" character. Partnered with Danny Aiello (after David Soul and Rick Springfield backed out), THE PROTECTOR (1985) saw Chan as a New York cop who travels to Hong Kong to, honestly, kick some butt and do some stunts. Jackie was so unhappy with the direction of this film that he shot additional action scenes for the HK market and then immediately made his own epic police drama, POLICE STORY released later that same year.
