It is a member of the African tetras family and is found in coastal basins and other areas of Africa, including the Nile River Basin. It mainly feeds on plankton. It can live in both rivers and lakes. It can reach a maximum length of 43cm (about 17 inches) and a maximum published weight of 500g (about 1 pound).

It is found in large deep rivers within the mainstream or in deep pools and lakes or backwaters. It is a facultative airbreather, breathes mainly on gills with supplemental gas exchange from aerial breathing when conditions are poor or it is too costly to obtain oxygen from water. It feeds on any available food, including fish and other small vertebrates. It also scavenges off large carcasses and offal from riverside villages. It can reach a maximum length of 150cm (about 59 inches) and a maximum published weight of 55 kg (about 121 pounds).

It can generate weak pulses of electricity for navigation, finding food, and communication. It feeds at night mainly on fish and crustaceans. They can reach a maximum length of 150 cm (59 inches) with a maximum published weight of 15 kg (33 pounds).

It mainly feed on particular species of fish but will feed on whatever prey is most abundant. It can reach a maximum length of 105 cm (41.3 inches) with a maximum published weight of 28 kg (61.7 pounds).
