Originally built as a set for the iconic Australian movie, "The Man from Snowy River":http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084296/ this "hut" was nothing more than a convincing facade, interior backdrop and roof. The back of the structure was left open to enable access for cameras and lighting. After the film crews departed, the hut and it's superb location on the Clear Hills became a mecca for 4x4 enthusiasts. But the rather flimsy construction proved inadequate to resist the alpine winter and soon started falling apart. Local 4x4 drivers banded together and commenced lengthy negotiations with local council and "green" interests who wanted the "hut" removed, the entire site returned to it's natural state and the access track closed. ...

The iconic Craig’s Hut. High atop Mt Stirling, around 51 kilometres from Mansfield, the hut was originally constructed as the set for the 1982 film The Man from Snowy River. Bushfires ravaged it in 2006 but it was rebuilt and reopened to the public two years later. Arrive by 4WD or via the 1.6 kilometre walking track from the Day Visitor Area. You'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the ranges.
