The Hen Hole is a gorge cut into the hillside surrounding the College Valley in Northumberland, England. It is said that you can still get "snow eggs" in summer, as the sun never reaches into the bottom of the gorge. Running down through the gorge is the College Burn, tumbling as a series of waterfalls.

After tropical cyclone Marcia came through south east Queensland, dumping more than 200mm in parts, I had the urge to drive into the Gold Coast hinterland and check out the waterfalls. They did not disappoint (even in the pouring rain)! This view of Purlingbrook Falls, in Springbrook National Park, was unreal. I couldn't believe the sheer amount of water plummeting off the cliff! This was as close as anyone could get as well since the rest of the track was closed due to flooding from Purling Brook!

Queen Mary Falls rushes over a cliff near Killarney, Queensland. It's a bit of a long trek from Brisbane but it's worth it, especially if you combine visiting these falls with a few others in the area.

Jesmond Dene is located on the outskirts of Newcastle Upon Tyne City Centre. Through the dene flows a small river known as Ouseburn. The dene itself is in a narrow valley with steep sides enclosing it. The Ouseburn flows to meet the River Tyne. The name Jesmond means mouth of the Ouseburn. Within the dene are a number of water features - ponds, weirs, rapids and waterfalls, all created by Lord Armstrong in order to bring a sense of movement to the Ouseburn. The newest feature of Cave Creek Falls in Springbrook's Natural Bridge is this log, which wedged itself in the falls in late 2012 and has been there ever since. It adds an extra dimension to the falls, especially when there is less water in them during the winter months.

Box Log Falls, in Lamington National Park and a short hike from O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat. It was so different to my previous visit, when it had so little water in it that it was two small parallel falls instead of this cascade. That meant the water was a lot higher too, so my feet got very wet in the process of finding this spot. Luckily they were already very wet from a number of other creek crossings so it didn't really matter!

This difficult-to-shoot scene, found in the Natural Bridge section of Springbrook National Park, is part of a very short bushwalk through the area, which takes you along Cave Creek, into the cave, and then up and over it. It's best seen when there has been a lot of recent rainfall; otherwise, it can slow to a faint trickle.

Elabana Falls is one of the most photographed waterfalls in Lamington National Park, and with good reason. Not only is it only a 3km hike from the O'Reilly's Rainforest Resort (even though we took the long way and took 8km to get there), but it's also ridiculously photogenic!

The gorgeous Lip Falls near Beechmont. I always want to stay much longer here, partially because the water is such a nice temperature to stand in as I take photos, and partially because I am doing my best to avoid the steep staircase that leads out of here!

Cave Creek Falls at Natural Bridge in Springbrook National Park. This is one of the more scenic waterfalls in the south east Queensland area, and it's been made even moreso by the addition of the log, which fell down the creek into the cave and wedged itself there nearly 2 years ago.

This is a wonderful woodland walk, which follows the Hareshaw Dene up to The Linn, a 30-ft waterfall. (Linn is the old English for waterfall). During the first part of the walk you pass through the spoil heaps of the iron works before entering the woodland section which has been enjoyed by the locals since the end of the 19th century. A wide range of fauna and wildlife is around you all the time, so it is certainly not a walk to be rushed.

Two of the smaller waterfalls that make up Elabana Falls in Queensland's Lamington National Park. It was surprisingly easy to clamber up to this point…although getting down would have been a lot easier if I hadn't had camera gear. That said, I don't think I would have wanted to go for a swim in these cold waters!

Looking up at the massive Queen Mary Falls and feeling completely dwarfed by nature.

What a massive difference this was. Six months ago I visited this exact spot in Springbrook National Park and struggled to capture any movement at all in the water above Twin Falls. After the remnants of tropical cyclone Marcia passed through, the stream was in flood and the rush of water was hard to believe!
