The Union Pacific Railroad (reporting marks UP, UPP, UPY), legally Union Pacific Railroad Company and often called simply Union Pacific, is a freight-hauling railroad that operates 8,300 locomotives over 32,200 miles (51,800 km) routes in 23 U.S. states west of Chicago and New Orleans. Union Pacific is the second largest railroad in the United States after BNSF, with which it shares a duopoly on transcontinental freight rail lines in the Western, Midwestern and West South Central United States.

Paul Crouse spent most of his adult life in the trucking industry both as a driver and as a manager with midwest companies including ET Reed, Union Freightway, Wilson Forwarding, and eventually Brady Motor Freight. In 1941, Paul founded Crouse Cartage Company (CCC) in Denison, Iowa and proceeded to build up a considerable fleet along with 63 terminals stretching from the Midwest to the Southeast.

This class of engine (2800) was responsible for hauling most of the long distance heavy freight trains on the GWR / BR western region for almost 60 years!

An afternoon at the Diamond

I discovered this lovely composition of a blue door at a country train depot. We were day tripping along a small town in near Toronto Ontario Canada. My spouse went window shopping along the main street while I wandered down a side street with camera in hand. Just to see what I could find. When I came across this of course I had to try a composition. Love the colours and the simplicity. Hope you enjoy this!

Pacific Intermountain Express (P.I.E) got their start in 1927 when the Lilenquest brothers began providing freight service in Idaho, running two Model A trucks between Pocatello to Idaho Falls. The company grew steadily, but P.I.E finally took shape after procuring three other firms and consolidating them in 1940. By 1946 P.I.E had 535 employees and was growing rapidly through ongoing acquisitions in the late 1940s and 1950s. In 1954, P.I.E became the largest hauler of petroleum products in the world. Service now extended from the west coast all the way to St. Louis and Chicago. By the mid 1960s, P.I.E extended service to the east coast through more acquisitions, giving them 67 terminals in 29 states.

This is the twin to my earlier picture of the Freightliner terminal at Southampton (UK) docks. This one is a bit more of a complex affair with lots of interesting machinery co-ordinating the transfer of freight containers to a waiting train. Its very easy to end up mesmerised watching it! Painted in oil on a 16x20 inch board

During the Second World War, the American military built hundreds of S160 locomotives that were shipped across the world to help with the war effort. This drawing shows an S160 in USA Transportation Corps grey livery, similar to one that can be seen on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway in Yorkshire.

The Class 47 was built in Loughborough by Brush Traction between 1962 and 1968. I've drawn it in Sector livery which some members of the class would have carried in the 1980s.

I find the docks fascinating, and nothing more so than the Freightliner terminal, where a pair of cranes travel up and down the rails shifting containers on and off awaiting trains. I watched for ages as they zipped around with large pulleys winding the wires in and out with a gentle almost melodial whirring.
