The Sunset Limited is an Amtrak passenger train that for most of its history has run between New Orleans and Los Angeles, over the nation's second transcontinental route. However, up until Hurricane Katrina in 2005, it ran between Orlando and Los Angeles, and between 1993 and 1996, continued on to Miami (via the Silver Meteor's route). It is the oldest named train in the United States; it was first introduced in 1894 by the Southern Pacific Railroad and was handed to Amtrak upon its formation in 1971.<br>For most of its existence, the Sunset Limited route was owned by the Southern Pacific Railroad. On a road trip to Denver from Ontario, we had tired of driving the I80 and took a little-used, parallel route through Nebraska and on into Colorado, The road was fascinating as it took us through so many small towns, all of which had an intimate connection with the railway. It is that that I wanted to capture with this image of the silo next to the tracks and the Union Pacific freight train rumbling by. If I remember correctly, this is the silo in a town called Roscoe in Nebraska. The day was dreary, but the dramatic clouds did make a great backdrop to the scene.

Freight train

The Southern Railway System, formed from the remnants of several failing Virginia lines, was incorporated in Virginia in 1894. By 1894 the Southern Railway was comprised of at least 125 consolidated railroads, with 75,000 freight cars, over 1,400 locomotives, and more than 21,000 employees. The Southern was efficient and innovative, and by the 1950s, it was the first major railroad to convert its entire operation from steam to diesel. This design was part of a campaign in the '70s trying to get more commercial customers by having one of their train engines asking their freight for a date.

Southern Pacific Railroad’s ‘Golden Pig Service’ was a marketing program to get shippers talking about their expanded piggyback service. In railroad terms, piggyback is when loaded trailers are placed on special freight cars for transportation by rail, typically for an extended cross county trip. The trailers are then picked up by local drivers on the other end for delivery to the shipment’s final destination.

The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSR) is a heritage railroad based in Cumberland, Maryland, that operates passenger excursion trains and occasional freight trains using both steam and diesel locomotives over ex-Western Maryland Railway (WM) tracks between Cumberland and Frostburg. The railroad offers coach and first class service, murder mystery excursions, and special seasonal trips.

Pacific Intermountain Express (P.I.E) got their start in 1927 when the Lilenquest brothers began providing freight service in Idaho, running two Model A trucks between Pocatello to Idaho Falls. The company grew steadily, but P.I.E finally took shape after procuring three other firms and consolidating them in 1940. By 1946 P.I.E had 535 employees and was growing rapidly through ongoing acquisitions in the late 1940s and 1950s. In 1954, P.I.E became the largest hauler of petroleum products in the world. Service now extended from the west coast all the way to St. Louis and Chicago. By the mid 1960s, P.I.E extended service to the east coast through more acquisitions, giving them 67 terminals in 29 states.

The Burlington Northern Railroad (reporting mark BN) was a United States-based railroad company formed from a merger of four major U.S. railroads and operated between 1970 and 1996. Its historical lineage begins in the earliest days of railroading with the chartering in 1848 of the Chicago and Aurora Railroad, a direct ancestor line of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, which lends Burlington to the names of various merger-produced successors. Burlington Northern acquired the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway on December 31, 1996, to form the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway (later renamed BNSF Railway), which was owned by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation.
