Lake Tekapo, South Island, New Zealand. Wild flowering Lupins ? The story goes that many years ago an American Artist wanted "more colour" in her landscape paintings and so scattered thousands of Lupin seeds. Birds and wildlife did the rest, and now, in springtime,the whole region is covered with a stunning blanket of these wildflowers. Lake Tekapo is about two and a half to three hours drive south-west of Christchurch. The township faces north across the remarkable turquoise coloured lake to the mountainous drama of the Southern Alps. Lake Tekapo is given its intense milky-turquoise hue by fine rock-flour, dust ground by glacial movement and held in suspension by the lake's waters. After some amazing snowfalls only a couple of days before, the snow cover was down to low levels. Tekapo church is one of those places that you can't help stopping by whenever you head up the south island. Painting this for a second time a year later has really shown how much my artwork has come along!

The usual brilliant blue of Lake Tekapo briefly turns pink as the sunset lights up the heavy clouds.

What good luck is this?! Of our three nights in Lake Tekapo, we were treated to pink southern skies for two of them. The aurora may not have been visibly dancing, but it was most definitely there! The church of the good Shepherd is on the shore of lake tekapo in New Zealand. This location is also famous for it's observatory and clear night skies. The church is drawn in black and white, under a full moon and star filled night sky.

The Church of the Good Shepherd is one of the most, if not the most, photographed buildings in New Zealand. Located at the south end of Lake Tekapo, in the South Island, it attracts tens of thousands of visitors per year. And therein lies one of its problems. It is so widely known that an original image is almost out of the question. Add to that the vagaries of New Zealand weather, and trying to get a photo without hordes of people, makes it something of a challenge. Fortunately, our stay at Tekapo was about two minutes walking distance from the church, so it was easy for me to get there early, before it was inundated with tourist buses. Even so, there were already a good number of "serious" photographers there before 8 am. All arm...

How amazing is this?! I'd hoped for auroras to appear during our time in Tekapo, since it's known as having one of the darkest skies in the world. We were lucky enough to have it two nights running (although we could only see it with the naked eye on one of those nights). I should have known the minute I got to the Church of the Good Shepherd that they could be seen with the camera, since there was a horde of photographers all facing south, which is probably not a normal occurrence at 11pm!

It was mesmerising watching the clouds from our holiday house in Tekapo. They rolled over the hills in patterns, sneaking down the valleys before they evaporated back into nothingness. It was like a waterfall made completely of clouds.

The beautiful scene that greeted us in the Tekapo Domain after we ate dinner nearby. The lupins lined the lakeshore for as far as we could see, the clouds were perfect after a day of drizzly rain, and the lake was a perfect shade of blue.

Lupins are absolutely everywhere in Mackenzie Country in December, and I can't say I mind too much. I just had to make sure I picked and chose my spots so I wasn't constantly taking flower photos! This shot was captured on the hillside of Mount John just down from the observatory.

The insanely blue waters of Lake Tekapo and the mountains beyond. The lake gets its colour from suspended 'rock flour' ground up by the Godley Glacier that feeds the lake. This also happened to be the view we had out the bedroom window in our holiday house in Tekapo (although it should be noted that this was taken with a telephoto to avoid the houses on the other side of the road from us).
