Fort Point, San Francisco is a Civil War fortification built to protecting the San Francisco Bay. Today Fort Point is a National Historic Site. The small Fort Point Lighthouse dwarfed by the steel arches of the bridge above.

Built in 1808 and decommissioned in 1958, The Gibraltar Point Lighthouse on the Toronto Islands is the oldest lighthouse on the Great Lakes and is one of the oldest buildings in the city. Local legend tells of John Paul Radelmuller, the first of Gibraltar Points keepers and beer bootlegger. Radelmuller was murdered by soldiers from nearby Fort York during a drunken dispute over his bootlegged beer. His body was chopped up and hidden by the soldiers. It is said that Mr. Radelmuller can still sometimes be seen walking the grounds of the lighthouse. The Key West lighthouse is located in Key West, Florida. The original tower was destroyed in a1846 hurricane, and a new lighthouse (seen here) was completed in 1848. It was 50 feet tall with 13 lamps in 21-inch reflectors, and stood about 15 feet above sea level. In 1858 the lighthouse received more lenses, and in 1873 the lantern was replaced after it was damaged by another hurricane in 1866. The growth of trees and taller buildings in Key West began to obscure the light, and in 1894 the tower was raised twenty feet, placing the light about 100 feet above sea level. West Quoddy Head Lighthouse is the most eastern point of the contiguous U.S.. West Quoddy Lighthouse overlooks the strait between the U.S. and Canada and guide ships with a blinking white light. This red and white striped light was built in 1806. This is a copyrighted photo.

The Port Clinton Lighthouse was originally built in 1896 and placed at the entrance of the Portage River where it remained active for 56 years. The light was decommissioned in 1952, when it was moved on orders of the U.S. Coast Guard. For more than 60 years, this lighthouse stood quietly on private property alongside the bank of the Portage River. Restoration of the lighthouse was completed in 2014 by the Port Clinton Lighthouse Conservancy and now sits on the Lake Erie waterfront.

It’s only 178 steps to the top, and you are soon rewarded with a spectacular view of the entire island. Originally built in 1736, Tybee Light is Georgia’s oldest, tallest lighthouse and one of America’s most complete historic light station complexes. It wasn’t, however, built for sightseeing. Rather, it was built to be seen. Still a functioning navigational aid, guiding mariners safely into the Savannah River for almost 300 years, the station’s light can be seen 18 miles offshore.

Small and historic Castle Hill Lighthouse sits on the rocky coastline of Newport, Rhode Island at sunset with the waves slowly rushing across the rocks. Castle Hill Lighthouse is located on Narragansett Bay in Newport, Rhode Island at the end of the historic Ocean Drive. It is an active navigation aid for vessels entering the East Passage between Conanicut Island and Aquidneck Island. The lighthouse was completed in 1890 on property formerly belonging to the naturalist, oceanographer, and zoologist Alexander Agassiz of Harvard University. Agassiz sold the land to the United States Government for the lighthouse for $1.
