A pair of narrowboats heading upstream on the Thames and passing through Boulters Lock in Maidenhead, Berkshire.This historic lock was originally calles Ray Mill Lock after the watermill next door (now a restaurant), the first lock keeper being the miller's son John. The lock is probably best known through the painting 'Boulters Lock Sunday Afternoon' by Edward Joihn Gregory (1895) showing a mass of skiffs and punts heading into the lock chamber.

A captivating image of the view over the River Thames from Ray Mill Island. On the right is the Boathouse Restaurant sitting beside Boulters Lock and which was once a watermill. Taplow and Maidenhead are joined by an elegant footbridge on Ray Mill Island. The lock itself was the subject of several paintings in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. My photograph has been finished as a coloured pencil drawing.

Backwater Moorings at Ray Mill Island

Boats moored at the landing stage at Ray Mill Island on the River Thames in Maidenhead on a summer's day. Behind us is the busy and historic Boulters Lock. Ray Mill Island is named after the Ray family who once owned the flour mill just behind where we are standing. The mill stopped producing flour in the 1920s and is now a restaurant. My original photograph has been edited as a coloured pencil drawing.

This is Ray Mill Island and in the background a new footbridge leads over the river to Taplow. A lovely place to stop for refreshment on your journey along this beautiful river.
