River Nile At Aswan Kids T-Shirts

Looking across the River Nile at the Aswan cataracts - just above the Aswan Dam. Here the river flows through outcrops of hard rock such as granite and was at one time an impediment to river travel at this point. Now boats terminate at Aswan and navigation restarts below the dam. On the hillside is the Aga Khan Mausoleum built to hold the tomb of Sir Sultan Mohammed Shah (1877 - 1957), commissioned by his wife. The image is finished as a pastel drawing

One of the islands along the River Nile between Aswan and Luxor. The luish green grass on these islands supports cattle which are farmed here. They reach the islands by boat or by swimming. The area immediately on and around the Nile is rich farmland but just a short distance away is inhospitable desert. The Nile has been the lifeblood of Egypt for thousands of years enabling the abcient civilisation to flourish. This image has been given a pastel finish - developed from my original photograph.

The Aga Khan Mausoleum at Aswan, Egypt seen here from the Kitchener Botanic Gardend in the River Nile. This building, standing on the hillside, was built to hold the tomb of Sir Sultan Mohammed Shah (1877 - 1957) and was commissioned by his wife. The construction of this edific, built of pink limestone, began in 1956 and was completed in 1960 and it overlooks the Aga Khan's villa at Aswan. The image has been finished as a chalk drawing.

The River Nile is more than a highway for river cruise boats - it really is the lifeblood of the valley. The people living in villages along its banks use it daily for washing themselves, their clothes and their household textiles. To the children of course it's a playground too! Much safer these days as since the constuction of the Aswan Dam there are no crocodiles here - they are all below the dam. The photograph has been given a chalk pastel finish.

A rather loaded felucca being pulled along the shoreline of one of the islands in the River Nile between Aswan and Luxor. These islands are very fertile agricultural land in contrast to the surrounding desert. Very possibly the men in the boat are being ferried to work! The felucca is a traditional wooden lateen-sailed vessel which is common to the eastern Mediterranean area and particularly on the River Nile. Once the main vessel for trading it is now largely used for tourists as a ferry and as a means of exploring the Nile. Feluccas are most usually seen in the stretch of river between Luxor and Aswan - where this image was captured. The picture has been textured to give an impressionist feel. Nikon D200 Nikkor 18-200

The ancient temple of Kom Ombo by the River Nile near Aswan in Egypt. It dates from between 180 and 147 BCE during the Ptolomaic dynasty. It's unusual as it comprises two temples - one to the crocodile god Sobek and one to the falcon-headed god Horus the Elder (Haroeris). Until comparatively recently there were large numbers of Nile crocodiles in this area (now all below the Aswan Dam) so worshipping them was seen as a way of placating them! This photograph has been finished as a pencil drawing.
