The Black Hills Motor Classic, aka Sturgis Rally, is a motorcycle rally held annually in Sturgis, South Dakota, and the surrounding Black Hills region. It was founded in 1938 by a group of motorcycle riders and originally focused on stunts and races. Over the years, the rally has become a pluralistic endeavor that consists of events put on by many different groups ranging from road trips and races to concerts and parties. 1990 was the event's 50th anniversary, and before you whip out the calculator, several years during WWII were canceled due to gas rationing. From the original nine riders in 1938, attendance in the modern era has historically been around 500,000 people, so needless to say the event is still going strong.

Choppers aren't just a style of motorcycle, but a movement. These bikes were always about art and engineering coupled with the American traits of freedom, individuality, and attitude. The chopper craze has several key phases, some better than others, and it continues to be just as strong today. Mainstream films like 'Easy Rider' in the late '60s and early '70s propelled choppers into the greater consciousness that had everyone wanting (or secretly wanting) a styled out bike with a set of long forks to cruise the open roads of America and many made it happen... keep on jammin'

Dick Allen is somewhat of an obscure legend among real chopper builders. His undying obsession with riding and honing the chopper to sweet perfection led him to create numerous ingenious products, but his hard-partying lifestyle coupled with a lack of entrepreneurship and bad luck prevented him from ever making it as the preeminent chopper builder that he could have been, but maybe that’s the way he wanted it. Upon relocating from Illinois to Los Angeles in 1965, Dick got right to work and created a springer front-end from the ground up instead of just extending stock springers. Sadly, most of his innovations were knocked off by other builders and manufacturers in one way or another before he could scrape together the funding to bring them.

Located just off Interstate 90 at Sturgis in the heart of the Black Hills, Phil-Town Truck Stop provided complete trucking facilities that were pretty state of the art for the day. Aside from comprehensive fuel and maintenance services to keep the big rigs running, Phil-Town had 107 air-conditioned motel rooms, a modern coffee shop, and a full restaurant serving a complete menu 24-hours a day.

I felt very fortunate to get this photo as it was early evening and just after we arrived the owners started getting in their cars and leaving! I'm not certain but believe this was in connection with the Sturgis Mustang Rally going on Aug 27-31, 2014 (so a search on google informed me!)
