A photograph of Lichen, Lichen (/ˈlaɪkən/ LY-kən, also UK: /ˈlɪtʃən/ LITCH-ən) is a composite organism that arises from algae or cyanobacteria living among filaments of multiple fungi species in a mutualistic relationship. Lichens have properties different from those of their component organisms.

This pattern reminds me of that bright orange lichen clinging tenaciously to tree branches. Developed from some abstract art on a repurposed train ticket, of all things.

On Olmsted Island at the C&O Canal in Potomac, Maryland. This is from April of 2014 -- taking a little break from doing the 365 type project, which was indeed a challenge. Realized how many interesting images I have on my hard drive that I have not even explored. This is a great place to walk and do photography -- this photo is a reminder of the impermanence of things -- over years, the lichen and rain and wind will erode this down to tiny bits of sand, and thence on to the Atlantic Ocean.
