Box Tunnel An Inter City 125 express train enters the western portal of Box Tunnel (Wiltshire, England) on the main railway line between Chippenham and Bath. The tunnel was built for the Great Western Railway as part of its London to Bristol route under the direction of the railway's chief engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It is 1.83 miles in length and at the time of its opening in 1841, it was the longest railway tunnel ever built. Construction was not without controversy however, and due to the length of time required to get navvies (construction workers) in and out of the tunnel, blasting occurred with the men actually inside the workings.
