The gardens are located on the upper tier of St. Peter & Paul Bastion, which was built in the 1560s. The bastion's lower tier contains the Saluting Battery. The garden's terraced arches were built in 1661 by the Italian knight Fra Flaminio Balbiani. The gardens were originally used to offer recreation to the knights of the Italian langue of the Order of Saint John, but were opened to the public following the end of the French occupation of Malta in 1800.

Australian White Ibis (Threskiornis molucca) flying. Oakden Native Fish Sanctuary, South Australia. This colony of Ibis is in the heart of the Adelaide suburbs. The colony has grown to over 400 in a very short time and many of the local residents are fed up with the noise and stench as their houses are so close to the small park where the colony resides. The birds are protected. At the end of the breeding season it is anticipated that the vegetation where they are nesting will be cut down to encourage them to move on. For those of us who don't live right next door to them it seems a real shame, as the birds feed on many of the parks and school ovals in the vicinity and are delighted in by the wider community. Males are generally about 25 percent larger than the females. Only the males have horns, which are prominently ringed & as long as 40 inches. Egyptian Geese (Alopochen aegyptiacus) are a member of the duck, goose, and swan family Anatidae. Australian Crow or Torresian Crow, perching on a bucket and offereing to clean a car windscreen !!! The Torresian Crow is a large glossy black crow with short throat hackles (feathers). The feathers of the head and neck have white bases. The eye is white with a fine blue eye-ring. Immature birds are duller black with a brown eye. After its breakfast bottle a 3 month old Bengal Tiger cub (panthera tigris) sleeps in the animal refuge at Wat Pha Luang Ta Bua, the Tiger Temple of Kanchanaburi Thailand, Southeast Asia. This Buddist Temple takes in orphaned tiger cubs, when their mothers have been poached for Chinese medicines, and has a breeding program to help maintain the population of Bengal Tigers which are endangered due to habitat destruction and poaching. This cub was born in the shelter.
