Chora church (Turkish: Kariye Müzesi, Kariye Camii, or Kariye Kilisesi — the Chora Museum, Mosque or Church) is probably one of the most beautiful museums of Istanbul. The Portara or the “Great Door” is essentially a massive marble doorway, leading to nowhere. It lies close to the port of Naxos on the islet of Palatia which was once a hill. A strip of land connected the north of the port of Naxos to Palatia in ancient times. Today, the strip of land has been replaced by a causeway. Myth has it that the islet of Palatia was exactly where Ariadne, the Minoan princess was abandoned by her lover, Theseus after he killed Minotaur on the island of Crete. The Hora of Serifos is divided in 2 parts, in 2 neighbourhoods, the Ano (Upper) Hora and the Kato (lower) Hora. In this photo you can see the square (Piazza) of Ano Hora, where you can see on the background the only building that's not white and blue, and it's the Town Hall.

Walking around the picturesque streets of Chora in Kythira (or "Cythera") island (Greece), you can see 3 different styles of Architecture: Venetian, Cretan and Cycladic. This particular spot with the "Fossa" (arch) reminds mostly the cycladic architecture.

n the vast majority of the islands of the Aegean their "capitals" are called "Hora" (or "Chora"). Most of the Horas are located in the interior of the island, high up on some hill, relatively far from the sea. The main reasons, were defensive reasons, as the people of the islands wanted to avoid attacks from the pirates that once upon a time were lurking the Archipelago. Of course there are some exceptions. For example, the "Hora" of Myconos is a seaside town, because the Myconians used to do business with the pirates, or in some cases were pirates themselves.
