For this years 'Summer in The Sun" photo competition, I wanted something striking, colourful and bright which depicted a highly relevant less bright *conservation topic right now...* and that of course, for me boiled down to the often overlooked humble bumble bee! Continued use of a systemic agricultural pesticide resembling 'nicotine' called 'neonicotinoids' or 'neonics' for short - are harming our bumble bee and honey bee populations and as a result, such loss of the pollinators, in whatever shape and form will have a catastrophic effect on our British 'country file' ecosystem and the food upon which we depend upon! Wasps - they always get bad press..!!! These little critters, treated by us humans as mere irritants... seldom get much appreciation..! Sporting black and yellow and dangerous almost like an escaped prisoner - wasps get beaten, bashed, poisoned and stamped on by the general public - wanting to enjoy their 'pub meals and drinks in the summer sunshine' in peace. Well the next time ~ you don't even think to raise your hand and swat one... STOP! Take a deep breath... and think Karma! All you need to do is gently brush him away, oh and just locking them up under a pint glass in the hot blazing summer sun is just mean... How would you like it - if the Wasp Police did the same??? Wasps blossom from the abundance of blossom during the summer which attracts other insects feeding on the pollen of various species of flowers. The legs of the insect that this voracious predator has just consumed can just be seen within its mandibles. Without insects such as predatory wasps and other carnivorous insects - we would be swarmed by plagues of 'biting insects' such as mosquitoes... So the next time you think to swot and kill a wasp - think twice, because insects like these - just like all insects, serve an essential purpose in life... and have a role to play - in balancing our global ecosystem.
