On July 12, 1979, 48,000 fans packed Chicago’s Comiskey Park for a doubleheader that included a promotion involving blowing up disco records. The event devolved into a fiery riot when crazed rock n' roll fans stormed the field as part of an anti-disco promotional event when a local disc jockey took the field between games to destroy the records listeners had brought. Once the crate of disco records had blown up, the crowd chanting 'DISCO SUCKS' cheered uproariously and began taking the field. From there they began throwing records and cherry bombs, tearing up the field and stadium facilities and otherwise devolving into an all-out riot that ended up with the Chicago PD riot squad being called in.

Vintage 1977 The Loop Radio Station

What could be more exciting, the stuff of boyish dreams, than a train that cuts through buildings and over roads, like a scene from Metropolis. In Chicago one can imagine it is the Golden Age of Art Deco once more, skyscrapers and girders of rusty coloured steel, more powerful than anything one could imagine. I stand in awe, a sense of freedom and joy, as the train rattles above. I love the texture of the metal, the patches of blue sky and the unruly greenery that reminds me of childhood cityscapes. The work is rich in realism, rich in texture and in light and shadow. A perfect piece of Americana, ideal for any collection, or a wonderful gift.

Dusk is settling over the city. A parcel of sky draws us upwards, bordered by sparking metal rails, and by concrete towers that dwarf us. Dark shadows below are eerie, damp patches of darkness. The trains thunder by, dragon-like. The city awaits us, inviting us to lose ourselves, to vanish into the labyrinth. This work is full of atmosphere, of Americana, and rich in colour.

Above me rumble trains, loud, otherworldly. In this netherworld, covered by its canopy of ochre metal, I look up, at a patch of sky, at the lines of tower blocks. I love being in America, far away, invisible and unknown. I want to explore all day long, to savour the smells and sights and sounds, familiar through film. I love the texture of the trains, corrugated, they cut through the air, through buildings. This work is rich in colour, it is vibrant and energetic. A wonderful souvenir of Chicago.
