A male (cob) mute swan (cygnus olor) on the River Kennet near Newbury, Berkshire in the late afternoon. The mute swan is the UK's largest and heaviest flying bird - as can be seen in their efforts to take off! The male or cob is larger than the female and has a more pronounced black knob at the top of its bill. This species is called the mute swan as it makes far less vocal noise in flight than other swan breeds such as the whooper or Bewick's - in fact you just hear the swoosh of the wings beating! Matschie’s tree kangaroos are medium-sized marsupials adapted to life off the ground. Weighing about 15 pounds, they have thick fur, brightly colored with yellows and mahogany. Tree kangaroos are true marsupials, giving birth after a 32-day gestation period. The “joey” will then live in its mother’s pouch for approximately 10 months, after which it will continue to return to the pouch to nurse. The budgerigar (/ˈbʌdʒərɪˌɡɑːr/; Melopsittacus undulatus) is a long-tailed, seed-eating parrot usually nicknamed the budgie, or in American English, the parakeet. Budgies are the only species in the genus Melopsittacus. Naturally, the species is green and yellow with black, scalloped markings on the nape, back, and wings. Budgies are bred in captivity with colouring of blues, whites, yellows, greys, and even with small crests. Juveniles and chicks are monomorphic, while adults are told apart by their cere colouring, and their behaviour.
