The club was originally owned by Jack Donovan, who was also the head of the ownership group for Salt Lake City's minor league baseball team of the era, the Salt Lake Trappers. The Sting lasted parts of two seasons, but financial concerns caused league officials to shut the franchise down in midseason on July 5, 1991.

Description: The Salt Lake City Trappers were an independent Pioneer League minor league baseball team, based in Salt Lake City from 1985 to 1992. The ownership group included actor Bill Murray, who held a five percent stake in the team with Richard Knopf.[1] The Trappers played their home games at Derks Field, located at the present-day site of Smith's Ballpark. The team is best known for winning 29 consecutive games in 1987 to establish an all-time record for all of professional baseball.
Description: The 1979 NCAA Division I basketball tournament involved 40 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 9 and ended with the championship game on March 26 in Salt Lake City. Michigan State, led by Magic Johnson, won the national title with a 75–64 victory in the final game over Indiana State, led by Larry Bird. Indiana State came into the game undefeated, but couldn't extend their winning streak. Magic Johnson was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Both players were drafted into the NBA and played in the next fall.
Description: The Salt Lake City Trappers were a Minor League Baseball team of the Rookie level Pioneer League from 1985 to 1992. They were located in Salt Lake City, Utah, and played their home games at Derks Field. The Trappers were not affiliated with any Major League Baseball team. They won the Pioneer League championship four times: in three consecutive seasons from 1985 to 1987 and again in 1991. Plus, Bill Murray was the team owner.
