Tawny Frogmouth Long Sleeve T-Shirts

This devoted little family disappeared into the background so effectively that I was almost nose to nose with them by the time I spotted them. In places it is difficult to tell where the birds end and the bush begins - a devoted discombobulation.

Found these babies, with their parents, high up in a tree in Belgrave, They were quite curious and happy to watch me.

"What?! Who are you calling an owl?!" That's right - this bird is not an owl, though he looks like one at first glance. This is a Tawny Frogmouth - a native Australian bird with big gorgeous eyes and known for funny expressions! This species eats insects and small vertebrates, and is more closely related to the nightjars than to owls. This design is based on an original watercolour and ink painting by Australian wildlife artist Nadya Neklioudova.

Whilst on my regular walk at the local park lake, I noticed this Tawny Frogmouth - usually they're turned side on, head in the air, eyes closed, but on this occasion it was watching me... disdainfully it would seem.

I was walking through the bush, when all of a sudden a Tawny Frogmouth resolved out the background. In this painting I aim to capture the effective camouflage of this amazing bird.

Tawny frogmouths, Podargus strigoides, sit upright, completely motionless on branches, with their heads tilted up & eyes usually closed to slits. Their plumage is finely streaked & mottled in grey & brown. They are masters of camouflage. They look just like broken branches. They are not owls, but nightjars. Surprisingly the Tawny Frogmouth is not an owl. I know! I thought it was too. That's the beauty of painting, you discover not only the curve of a beak or the shape of an eye, you learn a bit about the subject as well.

This Tawny Frogmouth was roosting in a Silver Birch tree - right outside the front door of my flat. Great when the wildlife comes to you!
