The 307th Engineer Battalion was first constituted on 5 August 1917 in the National Army as the 307th Engineers and organized at Camp Gordon, Georgia 27 August 1917 as a unit of the 82nd Infantry Division. This unit participated in 3 World War I campaigns: Meuse-Argone, St. Mihiel and Lorraine. It was demobilized on 17 May 1919 at Camp Dix, New Jersey.

Search and Destroy, Seek and Destroy, or even simply S&D, refers to a military strategy that became a large component of the Malayan Emergency and the Vietnam War. The 307th Engineer Battalion began its existence as a Regiment, the 307th Engineers, that was constituted on 5 August 1917 in the National Army and assigned to the 82nd Division. During World War II, the Battalion would fight in six campaigns, earning a coveted Arrowhead device for three of the streamers by participating in an assault landing. The Battalion has been deployed on numerous occasions in defense of the country, including two Armed Forces Expeditions (Dominican Republic and Greanda), Southwest Asia (often called the First Gulf War, and two both Afghanistan and Iraq in the War on Terror. After being inactivated and relieved from assignment to the 82nd Airborne Division in June 2006.

Initially established under Third Air Force in early 1942 as a fighter squadron at Baer Field, Indiana, flying some antisubmarine patrols in the Gulf of Mexico. Deployed to the European Theater of Operations in June 1942 without aircraft as its Curtiss P-40 Warhawks and Bell P-39 Airacobras were deemed unsuitable for use against German aircraft in long-range bomber escort duties. Was re-equipped with RAF Supermarine Spitfire Vs and its pilots and technicians spent a two-month period undergoing intensive training in flying and fighting with RAF pilots in the British aircraft from airfields in southeast England.
