Avebury is older and larger than Stonehenge; this is taken at sunset with one of the large standing stones as foreground interest.

Avebury Stone Circle is apparently the largest in Britain, and even boasts a pub inside it - although I doubt that it was part of the original plan!

Stone Circle at Avebury. Avebury is known for its standing stones: a circle within which the village has been partly built. The Neolithic henge monument, constructed around 2600 BC, contains three stone circles, in Wiltshire, in southwest England. Unique amongst megalithic monuments, Avebury contains the largest stone circle in Europe, and is one of the best known prehistoric sites in Britain. It is both a tourist attraction and a place of religious importance to contemporary Pagans. Canon EOS, zoom lens.

A new look at old stones.

Silbury Hill 3 Number of views as of 28th December 2016 = 110. The third (and final) image of my Silbury Hill 'mini-series'. Silbury Hill is part of the 'World Heritage Site' around the village of Avebury in Wiltshire, England. Co-incidentally, I was reading Bill Bryson's book 'The Road to Little Dribbling (More Notes from a Small Island)' the other day and here's how Bill describes his visit to Silbury: "... Silbury Hill is a wonder. It is 130 feet high - about the height of a ten-storey building - and is entirely made by hand. It is the tallest artificial prehistoric mound in the world. There is nothing like it anywhere else. It is covered in grass and is uniform all the way round. It is sensationally lovely to look at. It is genuinely...

Silbury Hill Number of views as of 5th June 2017 = 175. Silbury Hill, near Avebury (Wiltshire, England) is the tallest, prehistoric, man-made mound in Europe. It is similar in size to the Egyptian pyramids, though its purpose remains a mystery as no evidence of it being a burial site has yet to be found. Thought to have been built around 2400 BC, the structure is approximately 30 metres high, and its proximity to other prehistoric sites at Avebury, West Kennet and Stonehenge suggests that the sites may have had cultural connections. Access to the site is currently prohibited to prevent erosion, but I remember climbing it in the early 1980s. Date: 15th February 2016. Click here to view other images of Wiltshire.
