The Basmala (Arabic: بَسْمَلَة, basmalah; also known by its incipit Bi-smi llāh; بِسْمِ ٱللَّٰهِ, "In the name of Allah"), or Tasmiyyah (Arabic: تَسْمِيَّة), is the titular name of the Islamic phrase "In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful"

The Basmala (Arabic: بسملة‎ basmalah), also known by its incipit Bismillāh (Arabic: بِاسم الله‎, “In the name of God”)1, is the Islamic phrase bi-smi llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ “In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful”. This is the phrase recited before each sura (chapter) of the Qur’an – except for the ninth.[Notes 1]2 It is used by Muslims in various contexts (for instance, during daily prayer).

A tughra (Ottoman Turkish: طغرا‎, translit. tuğrâ) is a calligraphic monogram, seal or signature of a sultan that was affixed to all official documents and correspondence. It was also carved on his seal and stamped on the coins minted during his reign. The are two main component to this piece, one is the Basmala, which is the beginning of every chapter of the Quran (except the ninth) as well as the phrase said before a Muslim undertakes nearly every task. This was rendered in the Kufic style of Arabic Calligraphy, with the ‘Allah’ part of the phrase in Gold Leaf. The Basmala has a special significance for Muslims, who are to begin each task with the recitation of this verse.

Ar-raḥmān has the more intensive meaning, taken to include as objects of “sympathy” both the believer and the unbeliever, and may therefore be rendered as “the Compassionate”

Ar-raḥīm, on the other hand, is taken to include as objects the believer in particular, may be rendered as “the Merciful” (considered as expressive of a constant attribute).
