The Battle of Gonzales was the first military engagement of the Texas Revolution. It was fought near Gonzales, Texas, on October 2, 1835, between rebellious Texian settlers and a detachment of Mexican army soldiers. In 1831, Mexican authorities lent the settlers of Gonzales a small cannon to help protect them from frequent Comanche raids. Over the next four years, the political situation in Mexico deteriorated, and in 1835 several states revolted. As the unrest spread, Colonel Domingo de Ugartechea, the commander of all Mexican troops in Texas, felt it unwise to leave the residents of Gonzales with a weapon and requested the return of the cannon. Although the Commodore Perry Battle Flag is named after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, the 'Hero of Lake Erie', the actual story behind the flag begins with a lesser known name. Captain James Lawrence wasn't from a traditional naval background, and studied Law before joining the Navy as a midshipman in 1798. He gradually moved up the ranks, becoming a Captain in 1813. However, just two months after becoming a captain, he sailed the USS Chesapeake out of Boston straight toward the blockading HMS Shannon. During the intense, but brief battle, Lawrence was mortally wounded. As his crew rushed him below deck, his dying commands were 'Don't give up the ship!'

Battle of New Orleans, (April 24–25, 1862), naval action by Union forces seeking to capture the city during the American Civil War. A Union naval squadron of 43 ships under Admiral David G. Farragut entered the lower Mississippi near New Orleans and soon breached the heavy chain cables that were stretched across the river as a prime defense. Realizing that resistance was useless, Confederate General Mansfield Lovell withdrew his 3,000 troops northward, and the city fell on April 25. On May 1 General B.F. Butler led 15,000 Union troops into the city to take command for the remainder of the war. The permanent loss of New Orleans was considered one of the worst disasters suffered by the Confederacy in the western theatre of the war.

The Hawker Hurricane is a British Second World War fighter aircraft that was built by Hawker Aircraft Ltd. for the Royal Air Force (RAF). It was overshadowed by the Spitfire's role during the Battle of Britain, however the Hurricane inflicted 60 percent of the losses sustained by the Luftwaffe.

In the 1810s, what would be Mexico was still New Spain, under the Spanish crown. On 16 September 1810, when Roman Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rang his church bell and gave the call to arms that triggered the Mexican War of Independence. In 1815, rebel leader Vicente Guerrero uttered the phrase 'La Patria Es Primero' (The Homeland is First) in response to pleas from his father to surrender to Spain, making it the de facto motto of those fighting for their independence. The war would last over a decade until 1821 when in Declaration of Independence of the Mexican Empire would be consummated.
