The early transportation history in America is shown at the C&O Canal. Over 180 miles and operating for nearly 100 years the canal was a lifeline for communities along the Potomac River as coal, lumber and agricultural products floated down the waterway to market. In the photo are mules as an example of the pulling of barges along the canal. Maryland and Virginia, USA

On Olmsted Island at the C&O Canal in Potomac, Maryland. This is from April of 2014 -- taking a little break from doing the 365 type project, which was indeed a challenge. Realized how many interesting images I have on my hard drive that I have not even explored. This is a great place to walk and do photography -- this photo is a reminder of the impermanence of things -- over years, the lichen and rain and wind will erode this down to tiny bits of sand, and thence on to the Atlantic Ocean.
