Ocean inhabitants

Palaeozoic arthropods. Artwork depicting extinct marine arthropods from the Cambrian period of the Palaeozoic era, (between around 500 and 300 million years ago). The organisms seen here have been reconstructed from fossils found in the Burgess Shale deposits in British Columbia, Canada. The organisms depicted include Opabinia (top, stalked eyes) and Pikaia (long, thin at lower centre). Several trilobites are also depicted (flat- shaped, centre left and lower right). During the Cambrian period as many as fifty separate major phyla emerged suddenly. These occurence is referred to as the Cambrian explosion.

Yamnuska is an Albertan icon, the gateway to the Bow Valley, and it was also my first hike! Because of my history with the mountain, I was thrilled when we studied it in geology class - I had to give my sketch a new life.

Anomalocaris ("unusual shrimp") is a genus of Anomalocarida, a group of extinct, marine, invertebrate animals with no fixed systematic classification, possibly related to the arthropods (Arthropoda). Anomalocaris was the largest animal known from that time in the Early and Middle Cambrian Period (530 to 501 million years ago), with a length of between 60 and 120 centimeters.

Barmouth Bridge is a Grade II listed wooden railway viaduct across the River Mawddach in West Wales. It is 764 yards long and was opened in 1867. This is looking out to sea across the single track bridge on a sunny late April afternoon, having been grey and cloudy when I had arrived in Barmouth only a hour beforehand.

This view was taken on a late April afternoon and is looking south along the bridge towards the railway station at Morfa Mawddach, showing the single track of the Cambrian Railway and the mouth of the River Mawddach.

Coronacollina was an organism who lived between 560 and 550 million years ago, in the Pre-Cambrian, or Ediacaran. Like many other life forms in this time, it is unknown if it was truly a plant, or an animal, or even something else. It expresses tri-radial symmetry on the top of its mound, though it has four long sticks connected to it.

This is a depiction of the fossil hallucigenia, a Cambrian era ancestor of today’s velvet worms. Hallucigenia fossils were originally discovered in the Burgess Shale, a famous Cambrian-age fossil deposit in the Canadian Rockies. Paleontologists have been very confused about how to classify this lovely little worm as it was unclear whether it’s protective spikes were legs or it’s wobbly legs were tentacles!

This design is of a wonderfully odd creature that was alive during the Cambrian period. The creature actually existed all those years ago. The fossil remains of the Tully monster can be found throughout Pennsylvania and Illinois.

Utaurora celebratign Trans Pride! Utaurora is a relative of the Cambrian weirdo Opabinia. It's back was covered with filamentous gills that gave it a fuzzy appearance.

This illustration depicts three fossils, which were originally identified individually, but were ultimately found to be parts from a single, large animal: Anomalocaris! Anomalocaris was among the first of the great apex predators to swim the Earth's oceans. Though it was not overly large by present standards, back in the Cambrian Period it was a giant! Fossils of this famous animal have been found in rock formations throughout the world, most notably the Burgess Shale.
