The Mexican celebration of the Day of the Dead has its roots in Aztec traditions which were merged with the celebration of the Catholic feast day of All Souls Day, which is celebrated on the Catholic calendar on November 2nd.

Those left behind are comforted by constructing a reenactment of a fun celebration with their deceased loved-ones. A party atmosphere is created to help ease the pain of grief, and rather than focusing on sad memories, happy memories are conjured up.

Dia de los Muertos, is a Mexican festival of the dead that is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, coinciding with All Souls Day on the Catholic calendar of feast days, and the celebration of Halloween.

A day of the dead altar always contains skulls and skeletons to represent dearly departed family members. Death in all is horror is confronted head-on in this Mexican festival of the dead.
