Saint Giles - His Bells by Charles Altamont Doyle features Doyle's perception of ghosts as personified memories brought back by the bells as they ring at midnight in the nocturnal sky above St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh. His spectral picture of St. Giles exhibits a flow of ghosts haunting the city.

Another view from my office window, looking over the rooftops of Edinburgh, Scotland. In the distance can be seen the River Forth and beyond it the Kingdom of Fife. The city is affectionately nicknamed Auld Reekie (Scots for Old Smoky), because when buildings were heated by coal and wood fires, chimneys would spew thick columns of smoke into the air. Thankfully, most people have central heating now and the chimneys are just an interesting feature which mostly just provide ventilation.

A mysterious passage of light and shadow, thick solid stone, a greenish tint, gold tarnished perhaps. A cloister for gowned advocates perhaps, a place for ghostly footsteps by night, perhaps the very souls of the hanged and the damned in the heart of Edinburgh’s old town, or perhaps a reminder of a time when Scotland’s capital was the Athens of the north. I was fascinated by the neat shapes of light. I wanted to capture the moment. A lovely souvenir of Scotland. A great gift.

Free Church of Scotland Assembly Hall, Edinburgh, Scotland. A 19th century church (also known as St Columba's Free Church), situated just off the Royal Mile at the junction of Castlehill, Johnston Terrace and Upper Bow. Designed by Thomas Hamilton, built between 1843-5 with alterations in 1908 by Thomas Ruskin. An Ecclesiastical building still in use as such. Originally called the Free St John's Church, built immediately after the Disruption of 1843. Hamilton's pulpit was sketched by Ruskin, who thought it an 'abomination.' Classic British phone booth in a modernized use

I took a last walk around this area of Edinburgh. The sun was shining again, the heat palpable, and in the air I detected the familiar tang of the hops from the breweries, several miles away. I walked on the quiet street, at the southern fringe of the New Town, fascinated by the symmetry and the evocative implicity of the Georgian buildings. I wanted to capture the play between the light, the colour of the stone, and the splashes of white from the painted walls and window frames. This work is a beautiful souvenir of a Scottish summer, a great gift and a perfect collection to any collection of Edinburgh artwork.

Where the New Town starts to end and Stockbridge approaches, where the hills are steep and the shadows long, I noticed the beautiful play of light and colour on this golden building. It was a perfect design of symmetry, Georgian, solid, with fan windows over the doors, and built of large blocks of stone. It was a perfect Edinburgh morning, a day of Scottish summer promised and delivered, the air tinged with pine and heather and brine. I wanted to capture that light. The work is rich in colour and in detail, laced with a strong realism and solidity that make it a perfect souvenir of Scotland, an ideal gift.

I was somewhat early for the RB meet in Edinburgh today (26 April 09) so Sylvia and I had a walk into the very pretty Dean Village. This shot is looking east from the little bridge (Bell's Brae Bridge) over the Water of Leith in Dean Village, Edinburgh, Scotland. The church is Holy Trinity Church at the North end of Dean Bridge. Later, Sylvia went off shopping and I went off to participate in the meet. Thank to Chris Clark for organising a good day out with a really nice bunch of people. A warm August day in East Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh, Scotland. Princes Street Gardens at the heart of Edinburgh’s City Centre were once a lake called Nor’ Loch. The Loch, which had been the trash dump of Edinburgh for centuries was drained in order to improve access from the New Town to the Old Town. Later, the Nor’ Loch was transformed into the beautiful Princes Street Gardens we see today. On the left, you can see some of the buildings on Princes street. In the middle of the shot you can see the Scott Monument. This monument to Sir Walter Scott is located on Princes Street. A little further to the right you can see the Balmoral hotel. The hotel is located in the very heart of the city at 1 Princes Street, the main shopping area...
