Description: Scotland is a country that covers the northern third of the island of Great Britain and includes more than 790 smaller islands. It shares a border with England to the southeast as well as a maritime border with Eire. Description: Tartan is particularly associated with Scotland. Scottish kilts almost always have tartan patterns. A full plaid is a long piece of tartan fabric, traditionally worn as part of a highland dress. It usually matches the tartan of the kilt. A full plaid is pleated the whole way, with half of its length sewn shut (so that the pleats cannot open). Its length is almost twice the height of the wearer (about twice the distance from the ground to the wearer's shoulder). Plaids are any crisscross patterns of two or more colors. Tartans are plaids with a name to identify a community or family. Checks are plaids with a regular pattern, usually of only two colors. Plaid sometimes describes the crisscross pattern of tartans or similar.
Description: The Lion Rampant of Scotland is also known as The Royal Standard of Scotland as well as Banner of the King of Scots. The distinctive Lion Rampant features a red lion set against a yellow background with a double red border and the lion's claws and tongue are blue. The lion is a common charge in heraldry. It traditionally symbolises courage, nobility, royalty, strength, stateliness and valour, because historically the lion has been regarded as the "king of beasts". The lion also carries Judeo-Christian symbolism.
