Frigid Stars 1990 Indie Rock Throwback

On this afternoon in mid-November, we were treated to a perfect pastel sunset. The only problem was that, with the temps hovering around -20ºC and gusting winds, we struggled to stay outside for very long to capture it!

What do crazy photographers do on a full cloudy windy day with frigid sub-zero temperatures? Of course they go out and take pictures! This image was taken at the Hamilton Harbour in Ontario on such a crazy day. Not even a heavy sturdy tripod could produce a sharp image (even at high ISO). It was so windy you could feel the rocks on the edge of the water shaking (yep - that's where I was standing). Just to give the viewer a sense of how strong the winds were, the water level on a calm day is typically about 10 feet below the surface of the pier. Polar Bear Plunge Day on January 1 is not for the faint of heart or the very timid. Ice swimming is for the bold and daring. Plunging into January’s frigid waters is nothing short of the most insane yet invigorating way to celebrate the first day of every new year. Those courageous – some might say foolish – souls who don swim trunks and bikinis to splash their way into icy cold winter waters claim they are ‘freezin’ for a reason’ — usually to raise money for a good cause. Then again, there are polar-bear swimmers who just like the idea of doing something wild and crazy that doesn’t involve alcohol to kick off the New Year.

Penguin, Always Be Yourself, Unless You Can Be Me

This image, originally captured on film in 1987, shows a solitary tree amid a snow squall. The image was captured on a road running north from London, Ontario. We had tried to drive up to our cottage that day but had to turn around as the snow squall developed. Visibility was significantly reduced, creating an otherworldly experience, something that deserved to be captured. I've always loved the look of trees in winter; their summer drapery of leaves gone to reveal their skeletal structure. But on this day, as the snow blew and stuck to the windward surfaces, it artistically defined this tree, almost as if the darkness of the tree had been etched from a white canvas. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it.

Crystal clear skies and clear water set a gorgeous backdrop for this glacier and mountains in Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska.

I was able to literally pick up a piece of ice off one of these leaves, and the ice was leaf-shaped.

March in Colorado brings warm days and cold nights. The ice melts and freezes again.
