The Ghost Army was a US Army tactical deception unit during World War II officially known as the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops. The unit was given a unique mission: to deceive Hitler's forces and mislead them as to the size and location of Allied forces, while giving the actual units elsewhere time to maneuver. Some of the tactics the Ghost Army created were deceptive inflatable tanks, fake airfields, and complex sound effects. Their story was kept secret until it was declassified in 1996.

The Ghost Army was a United States Army tactical deception unit during World War II officially known as the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops.The 1100-man unit was given a unique mission within the Allied Army: to impersonate other Allied Army units to deceive the enemy. By the evening of June 6, 1944, D-Day, when they landed on Normandy with the First Army, the first of its detachments were in action against the enemy. By June 23, 1945, the unit was on its way home after having served with four U.S. armies through England, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland and Germany. During their tenure, they put on a "traveling road show" utilizing inflatable tanks, sound trucks, fake radio transmissions, scripts and pretense.

Phantom Army (Ghost Army) - Operation Fortitude - World War II Operation Fortitude was the code name for a World War II military deception employed by the Allied nations as part of an overall deception strategy (code named Bodyguard) during the build-up to the 1944 Normandy landings. Fortitude was divided into two sub-plans, North and South, with the aim of misleading the German High Command as to the location of the invasion.
