Pewsey Wharf on the Kennet and Avon Canal in Wiltshire, England. This is in the heart of the beautiful Vale of Pewsey. The canal reached here in 1810 when the wharf would have been a hive of industrial activity. However, the construction of the Great Western Railway which arrived at Pewsey in 1862 meant that the canal gradually fell into disuse. Having become derelict by the mid 1900s, a restoration programme was put in place and the canal was at last fully reopened to traffic in 1990. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

St Mary's Lane in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, with its ancient brick and half timbered houses overhanging the street. Tewkesbury is a beautiful mkedieval town, many of its buildings giving a strong clue as to its age. It was sited at the point where the rivers Severn and Avon meet - a natural and formidable moat! Near this image is the Abbey - in the middle ages the spiritual and commercial centre of the town. In 1471, the Battle of Tewkesbury was a decisive point in the Wars of the Roses. The regatta course for the Henley Royal Regatta. Along the towpath (aka the Thames Path) at Remenham in Berkshire, is a post marked for a quarter of a mile. The regatta coiurse is 1 mile 550 yards long and starts just downstream from Temple Island (in the background), finishing just downstream of Henley Bridge. Temple Island, seen here, is named after its folly, built as a fishing lodge in 1771. It is now owned by Henley Royal Regatta and is used for corporate events etc. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The suspension bridge crossing the Menai Straits, connecting the island of Anglesey to mainland Wales viewed here from Anglesey. Before the bridge, the only means of crossing was by ferry - risky due to the fast flowing waters of the Straits. Cattle going to market on the mainland had to swim over - many being swept away by the currents! The bridge was designed by Thomas Telford, work starting in 1819 and finishing in 1826. It was designed so tall ships could sail undeneath.

The tide mill on the River Deben quayside at Woodbridge, Suffolk. This is the 'newest' of the mills that have stood on this site having been built in the 1600s. The earliest recorded mill here was in 1170. During th middle ages it was run by the local Augustinian priory but at the time of the Dissol;ution it passed into the hands of Henry VIII. It operated until 1957 sfter which it became derelict. However, following subsequent restoration it was reopened in 1973.

The Kennet and Avon Canal as it passes through Newbury in Berkshire. This scene, taken from the West Mills swing bridge shows the canal as it heads towards the centre of the town, about to pass through Town Lock. On the right bank is the site of West Mills - Newbury was once a busy agricultural and woollen textile manufacturing centre. The tower of St Nicolas church, restored during the early 1500s stands above the surrounding buildings.

The church of St Andrew's in Chaddleworth, West Berkshire, England, seen in early spring. There was a church here in Saxon times and some stones from then can apparently be found at the base of the tower. However, the building as we see it is mainly Norman with 13th century additions. The south door is a superb example of decorated Norman work.The village of Chaddleworth lies on the southern slopes of the Berkshire (North Wessex) downs on the A338 which runs between Hungerford and Wantage.

This lovely market town, famous for its many antique shops has the Kennet and Avon Canal flowing through its centre. The lock at the eastern end of Hungerford Wharf was originally built between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of John Hore of Newbury. The canal, 87 miles long was constructed in 1794 -1810 to link Bristol with the River Thames at Reading giving a direct link to London.

The parish church of St Lawrence at Hungerford in Berkshire, England. The church stands slightly to the west of the town alongside the Kennet and Avon Canal. It was rebuilt in 1814 in the Regency Gothic style and was faced with Bath stone which was brought along the canal. A little later, in mid-Victorian times it was further renovated. The canal was constructed between 1794 and 1810 to link Bristol with London via Reading. Abandoned in the early 1900s, it was renovated and reopened in 1990.

Standing on the banks of the River Thames at Eton and looking across to the town of Windsor with its historic royal castle dominating the skyline. There has been a castle here since the time of William I and it started its life as a royal residence in the early 1100s uder Henry 1. The river has always played an important part in Windsor's life, having been the main route to London until roads eventually improved. Boats moored at Woodbridge on the River Deben in Suffolk. This image has been given a textured, impressionist finish. Woodbridge sits on the tidal stretch of the River Deben just before it flows into the North Sea at Felixtowe. The town was once known for its shipbuilding and rope making - and it is said that some of Sir Francis Drake's warships were built here. In the background is the iconic Tide Mill which harnesses the power of the tides to turn its wheel.

An old Oxford college barge hiding in a backwater of the River Thames between Oxford and Iffley. A number of barges like this were bought by the Oxford colleges' rowing clubs in the mid 1800s as changing rooms and viewing platforms for spectators during races. They have now been sold off and can be occasionally found as floating function rooms etc. Club houses were built to replace them and can be found near Christ Church Meadows in Oxford.

The parish church of Holy Cross at Shipton on Cherwell in Oxfordshire, England. The present church was built in 1831 after the previous building had been demolished. However, there has been a church here since the C12th - and a Saxon font gives a hint to a longer history. Originally named Holy Cross, in the C18th it was changed to St Mary and then to St Jerome before reverting to its original name. Shipton is in the Cherwell valley, the canal arriving in 1788, passing closely by the churchyard. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

A view of the River Derwent looking downstream as it flows through Cockermouth in Cumbria. To the right can be seen the point at which the River Cocker joins the Derwent - hence the name 'Cockermouth'. Also in this view are the Jennings Brewery buildings which have been on this site since 1874. The River Dewent itself rises near Scafell Pike at Sprinkling Tarn and then flows through Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake before flowing through Cockermouth and thence to the Irish Sea at Workington. A boat on the Mill Avon River at Tewkwsbury, Gloucestershire passing under Quay Bridge. This is a cast iron and sandstone structure dating from 1822 and is now Grade 2 listed. The Mill Avon dates way back to the C12th when Benedictine monks from nearby Tewkesbury Abbey diverted the course of the River Avon to turn the wheel of its water mill. Following the direction the boat is heading, the Avon is navigable all the way to Shakespeare's Stratford where it joins the Stratford on Avon Canal. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200

The view looking upriver from Quay Street Bridge in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. This is the town where the River Severn joins with Shakespeare's Avon just a little further downstream. Just to the left of the poicture is the Severn-Avon Lock allowing boats to pass from one river to the other. Further upriver can be seen King John's Bridge, a Grade 2 listed structure - and apparently if a boat can pass through this then it can manage all other bridges as far as Stratford Upon Avon!
