Green Winged Teal Magnets

Green-winged Teal. This dabbling duck is strongly migratory and winters far south of its breeding range. It is highly gregarious outside of the breeding season and will form large flocks. In flight, the fast, twisting flocks resemble waders. Green-winged Teal - female

A male Green-Winged Teal enjoys the calm waters of Piper Spit/Burnaby Lake. This dabbling duck is tied with the Bufflehead, a diving duck, for the title of the smallest ducks in North America. Only at Burnaby Lake can we see these ducks literally (and quite fearlessly) at our feet, chasing ducks much bigger than themselves. Photographed in January 2015, just as the sunset was touching the waters of the Piper Spit.

Green-Winged Teals start to mass at Piper Spit, Burnaby Lake, Canada, as winter on the West Coast passes its halfway point. A number of North America's smallest dabbling ducks also start to engage in springtime courtship behaviors at this time. This drake was particularly vocal, and gave me a good angle of himself in the process.

There I was, trying to walk very quietly through all the fallen leaves on the trail so I wouldn't scare off any of the birds or waterfowl. I didn't even make it to the bird blind before this large group of ducks took to the air and then landed again further back in the marshy field. At first I thought it was all Mallards but then noticed several Green-winged Teals were in the Duck Rush, too.
